Broncos Offseason: Could Ryan Fitzpatrick be an Option?
By Tylor Walden
With Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning officially retiring and Brock Osweiler possibly hitting the market, could the Broncos look at Ryan Fitzpatrick?
Life in football without Peyton Manning is going to be really tough. He has been in the league a little after I started watching football. I enjoyed watching him play, especially the past four years. The Manning Era in Denver is officially over.
With free agency set to begin Wednesday afternoon, the tampering period has begun. It appears as if the Houston Texans are interested in signing Brock Osweiler to their team and are making a huge push to acquire the signal caller.
The Broncos have made an offer of their own, but what if Osweiler decides to chase the money? What if the Texans do acquire him? That would put the Broncos in quite a tough situation.
There has been talk here on Predominantly Orange about Robert Griffin III, Trevor Siemian, and quarterbacks that the Broncos could draft. However, there is one name that has not been brought up.
Ryan Fitzpatrick of the New York Jets.
Now, it is unclear if the Jets are going to re-sign him, but if they do let him test the market, I would not be surprised at all if the Broncos made him an offer.
He had a great season last year with the Jets, throwing for over 3,900 yards and 31 touchdowns. He could also fit well in Gary Kubiak’s system. I have watched a couple of his games and he has looked pretty sharp in the few I got to see.
He has his sharp moments, and some dull moments. But as we saw with the Broncos last year, the quarterback does not need to put up flashy numbers in order to help his team win. Especially since the Broncos have an elite defense backing the quarterback up.
Next: Broncos still in the mix for Malik Jackson
I would have to say the best game I saw from him was his overtime win against the New England Patriots in Week 16. He threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner to former Bronco Eric Decker.
He is a quarterback who has veteran experience, can tuck and run, and has been pretty accurate throwing the ball. I think he could really help contribute in Denver. And if Osweiler does leave, he could be a great mentor to Trevor Siemian.
Not sure if this would happen, but having Fitzpatrick in orange and blue in 2016 is something I could be 100 percent behind.
