ON THE WAY UP- KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

The Chiefs are a good example of a team that boasts amazing talent at certain positions but almost non-existent talent in others.  Newly re-signed OLB Justin Houston and Tamba Hali give the Chiefs an incredible pass rushing tandem with depth to spare (2014 1st round pick Dee Ford will get more action, as well).

With them in the Chiefs ‘backing core is Pro Bowler Derrick Johnson, who is easily one of the best inside linebackers in the NFL.  With Dontari Poe anchoring their defensive line, the Chiefs defensive front seven can wreak serious havoc.  The secondary is where the defense definitely struggles. With Eric Berry sidelined for his cancer treatment (we wish him the best in his recovery), there isn’t a bonafide playmaker in that secondary.

On offensive, a shaky offensive line was greatly weakened with the loss of Rodney Hudson to the Raiders and veteran Ryan Harris joining the Broncos.  To help us forget about the record setting 2014 where none of their WR’s scored a TD, Andy Reid’s old buddy Jeremy Maclin gives an instant boost to their receiving core.  Beyond Maclin and Travis Kelce, I’m not seeing much hope for their receiving and tight end positions.

Their strength on offense is definitely in their running backs.  Aside from Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray and De’Anthony Thomas gives the Chiefs a dangerous group of backs capable of carrying the team to victory. Alex Smith is the definitive “middle of the road” QB. He has enough playmaking ability to help the Chiefs win games, but not enough to carry the team on his back.  He’s led them to the playoffs before, but can he get them further?

As for special teams, De’Anthony Thomas and Knile Davis provide flash like speed and ability.  You could make the argument that these two could score more TD’s on returns this year than their receivers (sans Kelce and Maclin) will on offense. Dustin Colquitt still gives them a solid presence in the punting game, while Cairo Santos is a shaky bet to have at kicker.

Season Prediction: 8-8

Bottom line- For a team with some great talent, there are enough holes to question their overall skill level. They have a great head man in Andy Reid, but he won’t be enough to cover up their deficiencies throughout the roster.
