Time for Denver Broncos to Trade Demaryius Thomas?

The Denver Broncos and Demaryius Thomas have hit a pretty major road block. With reports of collusion with the Dallas Cowboys in regards to Thomas’ and Dez Bryant’s contract negotiations, it may be time for Denver to cut ties with their Pro Bowl receiver. The headaches may not be worth it at this point.

When John Elway gave Thomas the franchise tag it seemed like a stop-gap in order to give the two sides a chance to work out a deal that would benefit both sides. What seems to be happening is the chasm is growing between the two camps. It does not feel like a contract is in the future for Thomas in Denver.

When Thomas skipped all offseason activities, Elway was angry, and openly went after his receiver for not being a team player. Now it seems like there may have been some underhanded dealings between the Broncos and the Cowboys to try to keep the numbers down for these two talented receivers.

This has been a tough offseason for Denver, with some talented players being allowed to walk away. That can not happen with Thomas.

At what point is enough, enough? When does Elway and the Broncos wash their hands of the situation? Is a wide receiver worth all of this trouble? How much money does a team really want to give to a guy who relies on someone else to get him the football?

The argument is an interesting one. There is no doubt that Thomas is an elite wide receiver, and talent wins football games. He has been the go-to guy in Denver since he put on the uniform. Thomas has been great in the Denver community, and the fans have embraced him as one of their own.

So what? The Denver Broncos are about winning championships. Emmanuel Sanders has already put down the gauntlet of Super Bowl or Bust. Thomas has every right to seek a huge contract, but if paying him money that will cripple the team against the salary cap, it just does not seem like a good idea.

Now, with the Broncos being investigated for collusion, the headaches just keep getting bigger. Every moment that Elway waits to make a trade is a moment that the trade value goes down. This has been a tough offseason for Denver, with some talented players being allowed to walk away. That can not happen with Thomas.

  • If a deal seems unreachable, then a trade is necessary. This Broncos team is solid. A trade could bring in an impact veteran on the offensive line, and some draft picks. Why not move on that, rather than end up being tied to a player who can only impact the game when the quarterback chooses to throw him the ball?

If a deal gets done, and Thomas stays in Denver – great! Broncos Country will welcome him home with open arms. That being said, if the headaches are getting too big in Dove Valley, it may be time to say goodbye to DT.
