Brock Osweiler is currently the successor to Peyton Manning once he hangs up the cleats. Osweiler is also in the final year of his rookie contract and has limited playing time in the regular season under his belt. But perhaps what the Broncos saw today gives them a bit more of what the future holds.
The Broncos began their second week of organized team activities today and the one player that seems to have stepped out and shown the team that he has a future with the Broncos is backup quarterback Brock Osweiler. The four year Bronco from Arizona State University got in more repetitions during the two hour OTA session today by virtue of Peyton Manning taking a scheduled day off along with the other veterans.
Allowing Brock Osweiler to work with the first team offense minus the veterans that sat out should give the second stringer a chance to prove that he is the heir to Manning and give him some confidence in the new offensive scheme that Gary Kubiak is running in Denver starting this season.
I think having Brock Osweiler practicing and getting more repetitions with the first team should give him some encouragement. While he did not have a clean practice, it is revealed that he is learning to work in the zone blocking scheme as well. During his time in high school and Arizona State, he was often in the shotgun formation. Osweiler even admitted that he has not been under center since his peewee days.
With enough repetitions with the first team as well as getting more familiar with the new offense, I have no doubt that Brock Osweiler will succeed once Peyton Manning calls it a career. Can Brock Osweiler become a franchise quarterback for the Broncos? Only time will tell. But after today, it seems like there could be something there.
