According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Broncos have been awarded tight end Marcel Jensen off of waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jensen was part of a talented class of Fresno State Bulldogs coming out in the 2014 NFL Draft class, but went undrafted and wound up signing with the Jaguars.
Jensen will come in familiar with fellow 2014 UDFA and Denver Broncos receiver Isaiah Burse, whom he caught passes from David Carr with in their time at Fresno State. After dissecting some tape and reading up on Jensen, he seems very much like a ‘poor man’s’ Jeff Heuerman, at least on the surface.
At 6-foot-6, 270 pounds, he’s a massive tight end prospect that looks more like a defensive end (in fact, he was formerly a defensive end) and he has excellent athletic ability for his size. Check out his measurables compared to other tight ends:
Jensen will be competing with guys like Dominique Jones and Joe Don Duncan for playing time and reps at the tight end spot, though Duncan could be seeing more action at the fullback spot than anything else.
This is an in-line, ‘Y’ tight end in the Broncos’ offense and he showed that in his time at Fresno State.
I think this scouting report from NFL.com pretty well sums up his game:
“Athletic, long-armed, ascending talent who did not play a starring role in a run-and-gun, receiver-dominated spread offense, but has raw physical tools to develop into a balanced “Y” tight end. Should only get better and has potential to become an asset in the running game and a mismatch in the passing game.”
The Broncos still have a few open roster spots, so it’ll be interesting to see if they take my advice and still go after Colt Lyerla. Or not.
