Horse Droppings: Broncos Interested in Tight End Help?

facebooktwitterreddit

Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Horse Droppings’ where we tell you all the crap you want to know about the Denver Broncos.

In case you missed it, there were some great things discussed yesterday in this column. The Tulane Green Wave has made its way to Denver, and I burnt everyone’s screen with the hottest take on Trevor Siemian anyone has yet seen.

Let’s move on to today’s topics of discussion, and we’ll start with the tight end position, which has now been greatly affected by the ACL injury suffered by Jeff Heuerman. Cecil Lammey of Bleacher Report takes a look at whether or not the Broncos could look at tight ends now that Heuerman is down for the count, and he even mentions a couple of names.

While Jermaine Gresham is certainly the big name among those he mentions, I think he’s right on when he says this:

“Gresham may be looking for a larger role than what Denver has available, and that may push him to another team—even if the Broncos showed strong interest. With his skill set, proven production and ability, we could see Gresham’s price tag pushed higher than the Broncos would want to go as well.”

The more likely name on the list is former Oakland Raiders tight end Nick Kasa, who was also a 2013 draft pick out of Colorado. Kasa has phenomenal size and could be the type of in-line tight end Gary Kubiak craves.

“When healthy, Kasa is a fine developmental player with incredible upside. At 6’6”, 265 pounds, Kasa can fly down the field and get open deep. He has good playing strength (a former defensive end) and can rip away contested passes from smaller defenders.”

Darius Kilgo Waiting for ‘Welcome to the NFL’ Moment

Our friend Chad Jensen over at Mile High Huddle wrote a nice column on sixth round pick Darius Kilgo, who is still waiting on that ‘welcome to the NFL’ moment now that he’s been drafted.

Rest assured, Darius, that moment will soon be coming. The veterans come in for work this week.

Here’s a snippet from that column with a quote from John Elway after the draft on Kilgo.

“I think when we looked at him, we thought obviously he’s got great size and he’s long and he’s got some athleticism to him and he plays hard,” Elway said. “So, we always have great hopes for these players when they come in and obviously we know that we don’t draft All-Pros, but hopefully they come in here and we help them become All-Pros. But we believe that he’s a guy that with what was left on the board, he was as good as there was on the board and our top-ranked nose at that point in time. So we think he can come in and compete.”

Belated Happy Mother’s Day

Though we should treat our mothers every day like we do on Mother’s Day. They deserve it.

That said, here’s a nice piece from Jon Heath at Mile High Report on Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, who bought his mother a car as an early Mother’s day present.

Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson Entering Contract Years

With all the fan favorites that have been drafted in Denver and bolted for bigger contracts over the last two seasons, it’s tough to hear of two big time defensive lineman coming up for new contracts this next offseason.

By the way, the Broncos don’t really have the luxury of letting these ones go with high(ish) draft picks waiting in the wings. Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson are coming up for new deals, and it’s something that Jackson said is on the back of is mind in a piece written by Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.

I know what I have to do is go out here and produce and make it hard on (general manager John) Elway not to give it to me,” Jackson said about a new deal. “First thing first: Getting into the meeting room, learning the playbook, getting through training camp and then getting into the season. I’m just trying to work, stay healthy and slowly chop at getting that big deal.”

Klis also reported on how Lorenzo Doss has looked up to a fellow fifth round pick in Richard Sherman, and how Shane Ray’s situation was helped by that of Packers running back Eddie Lacy.

Dominique Jones and Joe Don Duncan Time Andrew Mason opened up his mailbag and obviously found a question about Jeff Heuerman’s injury implications. He mentions in-house replacements Dominique Jones and Joe Don Duncan, both of whom are 270 pounds.

I did not realize Duncan was that large.

Wow.
