Horse Droppings: Tulane Duo Excited to Be United With Broncos
The Denver Broncos got some rough news on Saturday with the injury to rookie TE Jeff Heuerman, an ACL tear that will cost him the 2015 season in all likelihood.
That’s not the best way to start off today’s edition of Horse Droppings, but the show will go on for the Broncos and Heuerman will hopefully be fully ready to go by this time next season.
In case you missed it yesterday, we started Horse Droppings to share with you all crap you probably want to know about the Denver Broncos. We’ll scour the web for you and bring everything to one spot, so you don’t have to do it. Because we like you, the readers.
Yesterday, I wrote that I think Shane Ray has the potential to be a future superstar for this team. The Broncos knew at the bottom of round one they would probably address the defensive side of the football, but getting a top 10 player on their board? That’s another story.
Oh by the way, Ray had to pay Shaq Barrett $2,000 for the number 56 on his jersey. As far as NFL players are concerned, that’s not a bad price.
Ray is not practicing in full right now as he recovers from a turf toe injury he suffered in the Missouri bowl game this past January. Once he gets on the field and is able to display his explosiveness and speed off the edge, people will stop asking him stupid questions.
A great piece here by Troy Renck at the Denver Post, documenting Rick Dennison’s journey through coaching in the NFL. Dennison really is a remarkable study. A linebacker in the NFL with the Denver Broncos in the 80’s, Dennison has coached or been part of every single phase of the game, and flat out knows how to teach it. There’s a reason he’s been a candidate for head coaching gigs around the league in the past. This guy knows football. The Broncos are very blessed to have him.
Green Wave Has Hit Denver
A pair of Green Wave secondary members has found its way into the Orange Crush defense, and they couldn’t be more thrilled.
This is an exciting deal for the Broncos, who also had signed defensive back Jordan Sullen last offseason as an undrafted free agent. Sullen was looking solid as a UDFA pickup but was let go at final cut downs after training camp and the pre-season.
Now, Lorenzo Doss and Taurean Nixon will try their hand at making the Broncos’ roster, and they both bring such different qualities to the table.
Doss is more the playmaker in the backfield, the former wide receiver who can take the ball away. Nixon is more the athletic speedster that can disrupt plays and come up to the line and hit. He also plays the nickel.
Broncos can’t afford to lose Demaryius
Topher Doll over at Mile High Report took a look at the Demaryius Thomas situation, and why it’s important for the Broncos to retain his services.
“In an era where few players live out the lengths of their careers with the team that drafted them, it would be a blessing to have a player such as Demaryius be able to be a Bronco for life. He has the ability to re-write all the Broncos receiving records and a chance at being a Hall of Fame player. When you find a gem like the Broncos did with Demaryius, you do whatever it takes to ensure that he remains a centerpiece of the franchise for years to come. I am hopefully optimistic that John Elway can work some of his front office magic and secure a long-term deal with Demaryius.”
Trevor Siemian Making Progress
Siemian is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered at Northwestern, but he’s making good progress getting back on the field.
After listening to him speak and watching him sling the ball a bit, he’s quickly becoming one of my favorite rookies on the team. I’m really intrigued to monitor his development and what he’s capable of doing with this team. He might be a practice squad player this year, but getting reps developing with the team, he has really intriguing upside.
Dare I say, the next Tony Romo…?
Too soon.
