Terrance Knighton was a fan favorite for fans of the Denver Broncos since he emerged in the 2013 season and the AFC Championship game. He played very well for the team. It still surprises many as to why the Broncos did not re-sign him.
When the free agency period began in early March, the Broncos made a bold move by not offering Terrance Knighton any kind of deal. Even though he has stated it would take just a hometown discount to stay in Denver, the Broncos would not bite due to various reasons, one of which being the issue with his weight. Issues with his weight could have been easily fixed before the season began, but it seems that the Broncos were not willing to be patient with that.
There are many reasons why I think not bringing back Terrance Knighton could end up becoming a huge mistake for the Denver Broncos. My major concern is the lack of experience behind Terrance Knighton. Sylvester Williams is the early favorite to some to become the starting nose tackle in the new 3-4 defense. But there is two big problems with having Williams as the nose tackle.
He has no prior experience in the nose tackle position and is coming off a disappointing season.
It is certainly a gamble to bet on Sylvester Williams to get the job done as the nose tackle. It would have been a lot easier just to keep Terrance Knighton around.
For those who think that Terrance Knighton would not have fit in Wade Phillip’s defense, think again. Phillips has worked with various nose tackles. Even if Terrance Knighton does not play every snap, I would feel safe having him on the roster than an untested player.
It will be interesting to see how the Broncos defense works without Terrance Knighton. However, with all the moves that the Broncos have made this offseason, not bringing back Terrance Knighton could prove to be a big mistake.
