For the Denver Broncos, the center position has had its Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde phases. A player who could be available in the second round for the Broncos is Oregon center Hroniss Grasu.
The Broncos had two different starting centers during the 2014 season. The job was originally held by Manny Ramirez, but lost it to Will Montgomery later on. With Montgomery a free agent and Ramirez moved to the right guard position, the Broncos sixth round draft pick from last year Matt Paradis is the only active center on the roster. The team has yet to address the center position during free agency.
Hroniss Grasu could be drafted to compete with Matt Paradis in camp. If he were to fall to Denver in the second round, they should take him. Hroniss Grasu is one of the top center prospects in this year’s draft class. Playing for a zone blocking scheme for Oregon gives Grasu experience with the scheme itself, which will allow him to easily fit into the Broncos offense. His ability to pass protect and block during the run game will most certainly help Peyton Manning and whomever lines up behind the quarterback in the backfield.
While Hroniss Grasu is one of the better centers in this year’s draft class, he does have his share of weaknesses too. He recently had surgery on his left leg, which ended his senior year prematurely. However, it is certain that Denver would want to make sure he has strength back in that leg before considering him. His blocking can be questioned whether it is his technique or his guilt of taking on more than he can chew. Those weaknesses can be fixed with time. Despite them, Hroniss Grasu is a great center who could have a good chance of starting if he works hard during training camp.
The Broncos are in need of help on the offensive line and Hroniss Grasu would be a great fit, especially in the team’s new offensive scheme. He would be a great second round pick.
