Report: Broncos Show Interest in TEs Ed Dickson, Owen Daniels

The Denver Broncos have been quiet to the unofficial start of free agency, as they ought be, but that doesn’t mean they’re not calling around to player agents around the league.

According to the Denver Post, the Broncos have expressed interest in ‘varying degrees’ to tight ends Ed Dickson (Panthers) and Owen Daniels (Ravens).

Dickson, better known for his time in Baltimore with the Ravens, was a backup to Greg Olsen in Carolina this past season. His best season as an NFL player came in 2011 with the Ravens when he caught 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns. He caught 10 passes this past year with Carolina, but like I said, was playing behind Greg Olsen who made the Pro Bowl.

Dickson would be a decent addition at a cheap rate for the Broncos, and he’s only 27 years old, but he’s not replacing the kind of pass catching threat the Broncos had in Julius Thomas.

Some of that could be done with the addition of Owen Daniels, who has played every year of his NFL career under Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, be it in Baltimore this past season or the rest of his career with the Houston Texans.

Daniels had a bit of a comeback year last year with Baltimore, where he caught 48 passes for 527 yards and four touchdowns. The numbers aren’t spectacular, especially when you consider Julius Thomas had 12 touchdowns last season and Daniels has 13 in the last three years, but it would be a good veteran addition for the Broncos.

These are the types of moves we can expect the Broncos to make as a majority, though we saw back in 2013 a similar cap situation and the Broncos went out and got a bunch of guys who could contribute on shorter contracts, and they made just a couple of bigger moves. We saw them at that point steal Louis Vasquez away from the Chargers, and Wes Welker from the Patriots, and both of those players were key to the AFC Championship run.

Not only them, though, the Broncos were able to bring in key starters like Terrance Knighton and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, so you know this team is never going to just sit still and watch things happen. John Elway has as many holes to fill this offseason as I can remember, and his staff is going to have to dig deep in free agency to find those guys that can really be gems.

That could include, but not be limited to, players like Jerome Felton and Samson Satele, whom the Broncos have also expressed a degree of interest.
