Broncos TE Virgil Green Has an Offer On the Table, Per Report

According to Troy Renck of The Denver Post, Denver Broncos free agent tight end Virgil Green has a multi-year offer on the table from the team that drafted him, and he’s not yet ready to accept it.

Green has upwards of a dozen or more teams calling his agent, 6-8 of which might be serious suitors. Among those teams, the Denver Broncos, the man that drafted Green in John Elway, and the team that wants him back, hopefully in an expanded role.

Renck’s report indicates that the Broncos did not inform Green of what his role would be moving forward, but this is a case of a player believing he is more valuable than the Broncos are possibly leading him to believe, or he thinks he’s maybe worth more to another team in terms of having a more expanded role.

As much as the Broncos want to have Virgil Green back in the fold offensively, he knows and they know that they will have to add another tight end in some capacity. They aren’t going to sit there and guarantee him that he is going to be the starting tight end this year, which could possibly be his hang up.

Green may feel like he’s a starting NFL tight end, and that’s fine, because he probably is. The Broncos haven’t really seen fully what he can do as a receiver due to having players like Julius Thomas and Jacob Tamme the last three years, so Green has been developed more as a blocker, something no one saw him as coming out of Nevada.

There is a lot of competition for Green’s services because he is a good player. The Broncos cannot overpay for someone who might end up being nothing more than their second or third tight end, but John Elway has been bold in proclaiming that Green is one of the key players for this offense.

If you’ve ever watched the show Shark Tank, you know exactly the scenario Green is in. He came into the Tank with a product, expecting he might get one shark to invest, and he got all five of them to show interest. Now, he doesn’t want to make a quick decision and all of a sudden working for the Broncos isn’t his only situation.

Hopefully Green returns to the Broncos, but you can’t really blame him for listening to the other teams and what they have to say.
