Broncos Free Agency: Targeting Ravens LB Pernell McPhee?

Baltimore Ravens free agent outside linebacker Pernell McPhee will undoubtedly generate plenty of interest on the open market this offseason, and might the Broncos be interested in bringing him in?

Denver Post beat reporter Mike Klis opined that the Broncos would go after McPhee in his latest for The Post, among some other big name players like Charles Clay and Jordan Cameron.

It would be really intriguing to see the Broncos go after McPhee and to pay him what he’s worth as a linebacker in their new 3-4 defensive look, mainly because they went after DeMarcus Ware last offseason and have to re-sign Von Miller next offseason. I never really considered this a legitimate possibility but there has been talk and even reports that the Broncos went after guys like Michael Johnson and Everson Griffen as free agents, so they might be yet interested in adding a guy like this.

McPhee is an absolute stud, but hasn’t been able to get starter snaps with the Ravens having to play with or behind Elvis Dumervil, Terrell Suggs, and Courtney Upshaw.

The Ravens are obviously not going to overpay for McPhee, even though he is a home grown talent who has blossomed into one of the more underrated talents available on this year’s free agent market, so if the Broncos are looking to add him you have to wonder what the price is and what way they choose to work him in with Miller and Ware in the fold already.

McPhee graded out a whopping +28.4 last season by Pro Football Focus, which isn’t the end-all, be-all but is a pretty good indicator for guys who play in the trenches. There were reports earlier this offseason that McPhee would command $10 million annually when all is said and done, and the Broncos cannot pay that kind of money.

If they get him at the price they desire, the Broncos would certainly be getting a heck of a player in McPhee but I think they’ll focus on more pressing needs first.
