Broncos Make Additions to Coaching Staff, Hire Dennison
The Denver Broncos made some additions to their coaching staff on Monday, including making official the hiring of Rick Dennison as the team’s offensive coordinator. Dennison is a literal rocket scientist who played linebacker for the Broncos from 1982-1990 and has been an offensive assistant, special teams coordinator, offensive line coach, and offensive coordinator in Denver prior to his departure in 2009 when Josh McDaniels was hired.
Dennison and head coach Gary Kubiak are thick as thieves, and they were together in both Houston as well as this past season in Baltimore.
In addition to making official the hire of Rick Dennison, the Broncos moved tight ends coach Clancy Barone to the offensive line, and hired former Texans and Bears linebackers coach Reggie Herring to the same position.
Barone has previously been the Broncos’ offensive line coach (2010) and has been with the team for seven years, most recently as the tight ends position coach. He now has a major task in front of him coaching up an offensive line that is going to be switching schemes from power to zone blocking.

He’s been a successful tight ends coach in the NFL with the Broncos, Chargers, and Falcons.
Reggie Herring comes to the Broncos having spent this past year with the Chicago Bears as linebackers coach, but his connection is from his days in Houston with Kubiak, where he was coaching that same position group for three years (’11-13).
Herring has coached some studs in the NFL, including Pro Bowl players Brian Cushing and Mario Williams. Herring also was a position coach with the Dallas Cowboys and DeMarcus Ware from 2008-2010 when Ware was absolutely dominant.
The hiring of Herring as well as the hiring of defensive line coach Bill Kollar seems to suggest the Broncos are setting up to hire Wade Phillips as the defensive coordinator, being that he has worked with both of those guys in Houston and as well as in Dallas with Herring.
Still, the Broncos might be holding out for former Colorado Buffaloes defensive back and current Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph, who has been blocked from moving teams at this point. Denver wants to hire him as their defensive coordinator, but Phillips is a backup plan in case that falls through.
Keep your eyes out for more coaching hires as this week progresses.
