John Elway Has History of the Unexpected

Just when you think you know, you don’t.

Who could have predicted that a young quarterback would threaten to give up football if a certain team drafted him?

Who could have imagined that same quarterback would lead his downtrodden team on the road 98 yards to tie the game and then win?

Who could have fathomed that same quarterback would put his 37-year-old body on the line to pick up that extra yard to bring him his first Super Bowl?

More from Broncos News

John Elway has never been one who “goes by the book.” He knows what he wants and then he gets it. He doesn’t care how it happens.

Who could have pictured in his first big move as executive vice president of the Denver Broncos, he would sign one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL?

Impossible is not a word in Elway’s vocabulary. What we think can’t happen does with Elway. As he’s proven over and over. So you want to try and get in his mind to predict who he will nab as the 15th head coach in Broncos history? You would have better luck heading into the woods to look for Bigfoot.

Even Elway doesn’t know who he will pick. He has an idea. He has the guys he would like to talk with, but so much is out of his control there’s no way he has a clue. We have the guys we would like to see Elway go after. There are the coaches we surmise make the most sense for Elway and the Broncos. But all of it is speculation because no one knows.

  • Gary Kubiak. Rick Dennison. Dan Quinn. Teryl Austin. Adam Gase. Elway and the Broncos have asked for permission to interview one of them – Austin (who is now in Atlanta for his second interview with the Falcons). Elway’s talks with Gase were not an interview. So what does that mean? Absolutely nothing.

When has Elway ever gone with the grain? When has he ever done the predictable? Broncos Country should know by now that when you try to figure out John Elway, you come away shaking your head in amazement.

Let’s enjoy the next chapter that Elway will write in the next few weeks. Another chapter that will go down in Broncos’ lore and only add to the mystique he possesses.

Instead of trying to figure out what he might do with his new head coach, sit back and enjoy what happens next. As he has shown so many times in the past.
