The most over-used cliche right now in the NFL is, “Next man up.”

It’s one of John Fox’s favorite “Foxisms.” The Broncos have had to use that and then some when it comes to the linebackers this season.

It started with Danny Trevathan in the preseason and hasn’t subsided since he’s done for the year. Same with Nate Irving.

Now Brandon Marshall (not that one) is dealing with a foot injury. The good news is he should be ready for the playoffs.

In the meantime, look for Davis to play a big role in this defense. He filled in for Marshall and Trevathan against San Diego when it came to the plays and formations for the defense. Only Davis had to do so through hand signals since he didn’t have the green sticker on his helmet to hear defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio send in the plays. That’s pretty remarkable.

The defense didn’t miss a beat despite that potential glitch.

How the linebackers play on Monday Night could have a big impact on the effectiveness of the defense. The Bengals use their tight ends and Dalton can make plays out of the pocket.

The hope is the unit continues the strong play it has had all season.
