The Denver Broncos were in shock after last Sunday. The team, the city, the fan base, all seemed to be struck with a bad case of the mumbles, as people could not find words to describe the debacle that was the St. Louis game. I can admit to being one of the Bronco fans who went into the game expecting 50 points, and a funny Peyton Manning press conference after the game. Clearly, that is not what happened. I have taken my time, and tried to process the loss without too much overreaction.

The Broncos will not have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. What that means is a trip to Foxboro, again, if Denver is planning on returning to the Super Bowl in February. That is not the end of the world, but it means the road to Arizona is a lot tougher than fans thought it would be.

There has been a lot of blame thrown around after the embarrassment against the Rams. This writer even criticized John Fox before the game was played, calling him too conservative. Jack Del Rio took shots on Twitter from former Broncos for having a horrible game plan. Manning looked confused. The defense was slow and lost. It braises one question about this Broncos team. Where is the nasty?

Who on this Denver Broncos team do other teams look at and think, “That guy is nasty, I do not want to mess with him.”

Nasty is not something associated with the Denver Broncos. It feels good to say how nice this team is. Every story about the Broncos is a feel good story. So, I ask again, where is the nasty? Who on this Denver Broncos team do other teams look at and think, “That guy is nasty, I do not want to mess with him.”

Think about championship winning teams. If you are a longtime Bronco fan, you just thought about Bill Romanowski. He was nasty. You may have thought about Mean Joe Greene, or all the Raiders that ever played (who I hate, but are undoubtedly nasty). Perhaps you began to think about Chuck Bednarcik, or maybe Ray Lewis, or perhaps Dick Butkus. Ray Nitschke was pretty hardcore, and so is Clay Matthews. Richard Sherman (did that make you angry?) is not a friendly guy on the field. The original Orange Crush defense was nasty, and they almost won a Super Bowl all by themselves.

  • The list could be endless, but the bottom line here is that NFL teams that are successful usually have a player or two that people hate. Name a guy on the Denver Broncos roster that people hate. Try to come up with a player that other teams in the NFL game plan for because they know he is going to try and get under the skin of their players. Anybody come to mind?

I have seen some analysts call for an immediate signing of Richie Incognito. If John Fox, John Elway, and Peyton Manning believe he could help this team win, they should sign him yesterday. That is not up to me, and I am all the happier for it. What I do want to see is this team start to find that edge that so many teams in history have found on their way to a championship.
