Aug 17, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers wide receiver David Reed (10) runs with the ball after making a catch in front of Denver Broncos strong safety John Boyett (20) in the fourth quarter at Levi

Safety:

T.J. Ward: A

Rahim Moore: B

Quinton Carter: B

David Bruton: B-

Duke Ihenacho: F

John Boyett: B+

Charles Mitchell: B

Overall: B+

The safety play was really strong, for the most part. T.J. Ward got it going with a great pass rush, he didn’t get the sack but his hands were in the QBs face when he made the throw. Moore was aware of what was going on around him, he was around the ball often. Carter is looking great now that he is healthy. He flies around the field and if need be, take on a WR one on one. Duke was the worst safety out there. He whiffed on a special teams tackle and looked afraid of contact after that. He often avoided 49ers blockers and, instead of taking them on, changed his route to get past them, which hurt the defense a few times. His coverage abilities still are awful. Boyett was all over the place. He almost got an interception on a pass slightly too high and it instead went for a big play for the 49ers. That lowered his grade some. Mitchell is great on special teams and on defense he is tough and physical. He is more than willing to come up and hit someone.
