Should the Broncos be pursuing the big free agent names?
I’ve been taking a good hard look at some of the big names available in free agency and asking myself whether or not the Broncos need to make a play for some of them.
The first names that come to mind as people that could potentially make a difference on this team are Darelle Revis, Wes Welker and Richard Seymour. I’m going to explore whether or not these are smart choices for us.
There’s been quite a bit of discussion on Revis’ potential value to the Broncos organization. As I mentioned on the radio show earlier this week, I don’t think that picking up Revis would be financially responsible for the Broncos. The guy is asking for a ton of money and chewing up that much cap space for somebody that isn’t a drop dead necessity would be a huge mistake. Revis has undeniable talent, but the corps that we’re working with currently was good enough to land the Broncos into the number 3 ranked pass defense in the league last year. Dropping that kind of money for a guy that may or may not even be able to perform coming back from injury may be a good idea for a team with a more dire need at CB, but not for this organization.
Wes Welkah! Is another big name that some people are throwing around as a possible pickup for Denver. While it is all kinds of fun to say, I’m not sure how smart this decision would be. I like the idea of Welker more than that of Revis, because he addresses a position of actual need for us. If we can work out a deal with Brandon Stokely this season I’m sure that he will perform very well for us here but with the limited amount of play that Andre Caldwell and Matthew Willis saw last season, I’m still concerned about the depth at our hands positions. Welker could start for us in the slot with Stokely backing him up and think about how scary that starting corps would be: Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, and Eric Decker on the outside. Talk about a nightmare for opposing defenses.
Lastly I’m going to take a look at Richard Seymour. Here is one of the very few big names that I would very seriously consider picking up. Our D-Tackle position is in need of help. We’ve got some phenomenal outside pass rushers but last season we really lacked that same push up the middle. He is one of the best run stoppers in the league and even though he played on a poor Raider’s team last season, he performed very well before he got hurt. His age and his injury last season could mean that he comes in cheap and if we can pick him up for the right amount I think he would be a perfect addition for this team.
Let me know what you guys think about these or anyone else you might want to see Denver pick up this offseason.
