With Champ Bailey putting his house up for sale yesterday, there’s a real possibility that the Broncos could be left with a large gap to fill at left cornerback. That’s a position that they were hoping not to have to address in the draft.
However, NFL history shows that there have been some key corners found in the later rounds of the draft. Asante Samuel was picked in the 4th round, Dick LeBeau was selected in the 5th round, and Dick Lane who is still considered one of the best to ever play the position went undrafted in 1952. In his rookie season, he recorded 14 interceptions for the L.A. Rams.
The Broncos want Bailey to finish his career in Denver, and they assured fans that they are doing everything possible to make that happen. John Elway said via Twitter:
"“We’ve been working with Champ Bailey’s representative this week on a new contract, which is an important priority for us. Our conversations have been constructive, and we’ll continue those talks in the hopes that we can reach an agreement. Champ’s an elite player who means a great deal to our entire organization and our fans.” – John Elway"
It’s certainly understandable if Bailey wants out. He’s had to deal with numerous coaching changes, and a team that hasn’t been able to pick itself up off the ground since their 2005 AFC Conference Championship loss. He deserves to finish his career off on a winning team, and if he perceives that he won’t be able to do that with the Broncos, then it’s his right get out of town.
With Elway and John Fox manning the ship, however, the Broncos should be able to make a quick U-turn back to success. If Bailey can hold on for another year or two, his talent and leadership could be an instrumental piece in reviving the once thriving Broncos.
