Trading Places

Through the first 4 weeks into the season I can’t help but think one thing about the Broncos; we are the new Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bears are the new Denver Broncos. What do I mean by this? Think about it…we are playing top notch hard hitting defense that is holding teams to 10 points or less. We have a run first, short passes second, offense with the goal of eating up the game clock and avoiding the big turnover. We put our faith in the defense and hold our breath when our quarterback drops back to pass on a third down and long…sound familiar? We are like the Chicago Bears of the last few seasons.

Any fan that looks at the play of the new Broncos…I mean the new Bears…um…well the team that has Cutler on it now, will see a team that looks like the Broncos did last year. The Cutler lead Bears are starting to pass a lot more then they use too. The Bears are more turnover prone. They are scoring a lot more points but are giving up more too. The Bears have already had several games that turned into shoot-outs. The Bears are having shoot-outs…strange world.

While I have no scientific research to support my two team morphing theory I stand behind this insight with the highest journalistic credibility…is there such a thing? I think one way to explain this change is the simple fact that every team takes on the style and character of its quarterback. It would sure explain what we are seeing right now. One thing for sure is that defense wins championships even without a great offense; just ask the Baltimore Ravens or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
