The big debate is whether the Broncos should have drafted RB Knowshon Moreno with the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft. Here are the Top Five Reasons why the Broncos need Knowshon Moreno
5. Georgia Migraine
Coach McDaniels suffered from a migraine days before the draft then proceeded to select a RB from Georgia. The last time a migraine and a Georgia running back were linked together was?…you guessed it.
4. Georgia is Running Back U
Georgia has produced solid runners that found success in the NFL.
Garrison Hearst–
Hearst was drafted by the Phoenix Cardinals in the first round of the 1993 draft. Garrison amassed over 7,900 yards in his NFL career. He was named Comeback Player of the Year, twice. With the 49’ers in 1998, Hearst rushed for over 1,500 yards. His last season in the NFL was in 1994 playing with the Denver Broncos.
Rodney Hampton–
Drafted in the first round of the 1990 draft by the NY Giants, Rodney played in the NFL from 1990-1997. He rushed for almost 6,900 yards. Hampton rushed for over 1,000 yards in each season from 1991-1995 and earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Giants Super Bowl XXV championship team.
Herschel Walker–
Walker moved on to the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys in 1986. He played in the NFL with the Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, and Vikings. Walker retired after the 1997 season. During his career Walker rushed for over 8,200 yards and scored 61 TDs.
Terrell Davis–
Drafted by the Broncos in 1995, Davis would play for Denver from 1995-2002. He finished his NFL career with 7,607 yards rushing and 60 td’s. He won the Super Bowl MVP in 1997, and won NFL MVP honors in 1998.
3. Insult to Injury
The biggest reason the Broncos missed the playoffs last season (besides the aweful defense) is the countless injuries throughout the roster. When Tatum Bell had to call in sick from his job at the mall in order to accommodate Denver’s request to be the starting RB, any coach would think twice about the depth chart.
2. Kyle’s Corner
The one element that any good quarterback needs is a successful running game. The NFL is all about balance and unpredictability. A pass happy offense last year yielded only 8 wins for Denver. Play-action passes, RB receptions in the flat, and pounding runs at the goal line are essential. Knowshon Moreno has the skills of an every down back and will provide new QB Kyle Orton less pressure to beat teams with his arm alone.
1. Early Bird Gets the Worm
While the Broncos may have considered drafting a defensive player for the 12th pick one idea kept them up at night. The San Diego Chargers were definately interested in Knowshon Moreno. Moreno going to the Chargers made sense with an aging L.T. at the end of his contract next year. Could you sleep at night if you didn’t pick Moreno, he became successful, and he played against you twice a year?
