Broncos First Preseason Game

The Broncos first preseason game was full of ups and downs in their 16-19 loss. One minute I see Boss Bailey shuttled off the field (sprained ankle) and the next minute I see his replacement, Louis Green, carried off on a stretcher (neck). Then I see Jay Cutler hurdling over the goal line for the only TD score. Has diabetes given him an extra bounce? Rookie Eddie Royal slid into the #2 receiving spot where he caught a couple of passes and took some time to contribute on special teams. It will be a joy to watch him this year.

What happened to the team’s other stars? Selvin Young touched the ball four times for a total of 3 dreadful yards while Ryan Clady was taken to school by the Texans defensive end, Mario Williams. Penalties were the story of the game and right tackle Ryan Harris chalked up four of them himself. Corners Champ Bailey and Dre Bly sat out due to injury, and it’s probably a good thing with the way defensive players were going down last night. The veteran receivers didn’t spark up any conversation, but Darrell Hackney’s flip did. He could have earned a perfect 10.000 in China this summer.

It’s too hard to judge a team’s overall performance in the preseason. Starters only play the first quarter while other guys play the rest of the game trying to secure their position on the roster. The only thing the Broncos can do is continue to use these games as a way to improve and weed out the unproductive players.
