Alan Pastrana played QB for the Broncos for two seasons (AACC.edu)

Alan Pastrana played quarterback for the Broncos from 1969 to 1970, but at the end of his two year stint, Pastrana suffered a major concussion. There’s perhaps no bigger topic in the NFL than concussions nowadays, but back when Pastrana played, it was a “play through it” type of injury.

The L.A. Times recently did a piece on Pastrana’s superstar nephew, Travis Pastrana, who has competed in action sports for over a decade. This weekend, Travis will compete in RallyCross at the X Games in L.A. He’s suffered approximately 50 concussions over the course of his career. The article talks about concussions in action sports and how they are viewed as related to football.

“It used to be that the football players were the hallmark of concussion and violence in sports,” she says. Action sports athletes “are the ones who should be the benchmark now for bad head injuries. I don’t think people really get that. I think they look at football players, but they don’t look at [action sports] athletes.” - Dr. Neha Raukar (L.A. Times)
