(Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports)

There are three tiers of running backs on the Denver Broncos’ roster.

The first consists of 31-year-old Willis McGahee. He’s a proven veteran, and averaged 4.4 yards per carry before he went down in week 11 with a torn MCL and a compression fracture in his right knee when it hit the helmet of Chargers’ CB Quentin Jammer.

The second level of running backs consists of Knowshon Moreno, Lance Ball, and Jeremiah Johnson. All of them are in their mid-20′s and have shown glimpses of greatness at times. The things about greatness is it has to be more consistent. Moreno has played in 15 games combined over the past two seasons thanks to injuries. Ball averaged 3.8 yards per carry in 2012. Johnson replaced Moreno in 2011 and averaged 5.5 yards per carry in eight games. Perhaps for reasons related to consistency, these three guys haven’t received the starting call.

Then there’s the third tier of running backs on the roster. Ronnie Hillman, 21, and Montee Ball, 22, have sparked the Broncos’ interest in the last two drafts, respectively.

In his rookie year, Hillman rushed for 330 yards (3.9 average) and one touchdown in 14 games. Typical for rookies, Hillman ended the season much lighter than he started. After Wednesday’s OTA, Hillman said he weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 pounds when the season ended.

We can all remember this series of plays from the playoff loss to the Ravens: With the Broncos up by seven points late in the fourth quarter, the team simply needed just a few first downs to run out the clock.

After a timeout by the Ravens, the Broncos had the ball on their own 44-yard line on 1st-and-10. Remember the team had lost Moreno for the game due to injury. Hillman rushed up the middle until he was tackled by Ray Lewis. The result: 2 yards. The Ravens burned another timeout. On the next play, Hillman ran to the left until he was tackled by Ma’ake Kemoeatu and Lewis. The result: 1 yard. This brings the Broncos to their own 47-yard line at the two-minute warning. Things didn’t work out for Hillman up the middle or on the left side, so on third down he went up the right side. The result: No gain and another tackle by Kemoeatu. Britton Colquitt trotted out onto the field to punt the ball to Joe Flacco, Jacoby Jones and the rest of the Ravens. We know what happens from there.

*Cease the flashback to “The Nightmare.”

After averaging 1.0 yard per carry on that important series, Hillman realized he needed to put on some bulk.

“Right now, I’m probably about 15 pounds heavier than I was in the last game that we played,” Hillman said on Wednesday. “I’ll probably play at like 195 [pounds].”

Hillman worked out in California this off season and he says that since he’s practicing with the extra weight now, he’ll be comfortable with it by the time the season gets underway. The extra weight should also help him with his pass blocking.

Montee Ball (38) during rookie minicamp at the Broncos training facility. (Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports)

“The thing that he’s shown us the last three days is at least his aggressiveness and willingness to go attack the blitzer,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase said. “That’s what we need to see. When we get in pads, that’s going to be a different deal as far as, OK, is he going to be able to sustain and do it consistently? I think he will. That size that he’s put on, that should help him.”

After injuries to McGahee and Moreno last season, the Broncos realized that they needed to add even more youth to the running back position. That’s why they drafted Ball. The rookie out of Wisconsin currently has over 20 pounds on Hillman. He was the country’s leading rusher in 2011 with 1,923 yards and 39 touchdowns (33 rushing), which was also the year that he was a Heisman Trophy finalist. In 2012, Ball racked up 1,850 yards and 22 touchdowns.

“He’s trying to pick up the offense. He’s a rookie,” Gase said. “There are a lot of things going on and he’s trying to pick it up as quick as possible. Obviously drafting him in the second round, we’re looking for him to make some kind of impact for us and be able to be on the field five, six plays and work together with that group of running backs.”

“Another great player added to the roster,” Hillman said of Ball.

Just like John Elway always says, the young guys are our future.

With productivity, they’re also another good insurance policy on Peyton Manning.

There are lots of experts and talking heads speculating about the order of this year’s draft. Yes, I too, am guilty as charged. Last week, I made a case for Eddie Lacy, the big bruising national champion that many reckon will fall in the later portion of the first round.

Lacy had been recovering from a hamstring injury and missed both Alabama’s pro day and the combine. On Thursday, he finally stepped out on the field and gave the NFL a taste of what he was capable of… and the reviews could not be more mixed!

Lacy looked winded often on Thursday and could not finish his positional workout. He also managed to lose about 12 pounds. He claimed it was the most action he’d seen since his injury. Others questioned his work ethic and wondered why he wasn’t more prepared for his big day. His most notable is that he ran forties in 4.57 and 4.60 which is faster than most scouts expected. The sentiment was that he’d clock in somewhere around 4.62 or higher.

Also impressive if you’re a Broncos fan is that his hands, something he wasn’t able to showcase in Alabama, were very reliable. Sure, he had a couple of bobbled catches but he didn’t didn’t drop anything. He looked comfortable in the role of receiver which is a character Peyton Manning will undoubtedly require him to play.

The combination of his speed (a 4.57 at 230 pounds is certainly a reason to be impressed) and his hands but ultimately his lack of conditioning speaks volumes about the mixed emotions Lacy’s performance has generated. Still, conditioning and recovering from injury are difficult notions to juxtapose. Lacy hasn’t been on a football field in any type of game like scenario in four months and he has been injured. Isn’t conditioning something that can be worked on over the summer as he fully recovers. Why was no one questioning his work ethic when he ran for 17 TD’s and over 1300 yards? His offensive line was definitely incredible but it’s not as though Lacy was sitting on a recliner with a bag of nachos waiting for hand offs.

The bigger issue is that the Broncos seem to be more interested in grabbing a defensive player in round one. Normally, you’ll never hear me complain about that. However, if Lacy is there at 28 and the Broncos still have that pick twelve days from now there is absolutely no way this team can leave him on the board. While many are nervous about life post Elvis Dumervil, let’s reflect back on the heartbreaking AFC Divisional loss to the Ravens. With only Ronnie Hillman left to pass block and carry the load, Denver’s offense screached to a halt late in the game.

That’s not a knock on Hillman nor was it all his fault. He’s not an every down back and he fought as hard as he could in a role he is not designed to play. Late in a game when you’re up a touchdown, you should be able to turn to a power back to eat the clock and end the game. The problem is the Broncos no longer have a reliable running back to play that role. One is too fragile and one is too old. One should be dismissed and the other could be a mentor… but Lacy? He could be the future.

In the first round of the 1982 NFL draft (21st overall), the Denver Broncos and then head coach Dan Reeves selected running back Gerald Willhite out of San Jose St. University. Willhite had a productive career for the Broncos, but was perhaps more known for his identifiable touchdown celebration of a standing back-flip in the end zone.

<Insert really cheesy segway here>

Heading into the 2013 season, it would appear that Denver will be flipping their stable of running backs (I know, it’s kind if a reach). Heading into the 2013 off season, the Broncos stable of RBs included Willis McGahee, Knowshon Moreno, Lance Ball, Ronnie Hillman, Jacob Hester, and Chris Gronkowski. The only member of this group that is guaranteed to be back is Hillman, who was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft out of San Diego St. University. It’s not as if a 3rd round pick is that untouchable. Rather John Elway and John Fox are really high on Hillman and both expressed as much at the NFL combine last weekend in Indianapolis.

Hillman has very good speed, catches passes out of the backfield, and can be explosive. The question marks are his durability to run between the tackles and blocking. The latter was exposed in the divisional playoff game on January 12th. The good news is that he is only 21, will fill out more, and will get stronger and more experienced to handle those duties.

Of the other aforementioned backs, it’s likely that McGahee, Gronkowski, and Hester will be waived. Lance Ball is an unrestricted free agent and if the Broncos don’t offer him a deal before March 12th, he could sign elsewhere.

The biggest unknown is Moreno. The oft-injured former All-American from Georgia had a bit of a break-out year once McGahee went down in week 11. It appeared that the New Jersey native was finally reaching his potential. Oh, did I say that he was oft-injured? The future deciding factors of ability to play vs inability to stay healthy collided on January 12th against the Baltimore Ravens. He was having a good game. He caught a beautiful go-ahead TD pass in the 2nd quarter on a throw that only Peyton Manning and maybe two or three other QBs in the NFL can make. He was also blocking well, which along with being able to run between the tackles were noticeable voids in the Broncos offense from the time of his third quarter exit from a knee injury. And therein lies the conundrum. Keep him and his upside at the risk of being injury prone or cut him loose. The other option is to see if Moreno will restructure his deal so an injury or a buy-out will not hamstring the Denver in relation to the salary cap (pun intended).

All of this leads me to the crux of this article: the college options at the running back position. Here are a few guys that are either high on a lot of boards or have caught my eye:

Eddie Lacy (5-11, 231 pounds, Alabama): Lacy is without question the highest profiled back in the draft (Ranked #1). He had a great game against Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship and proved that he can run it within the hashes and steamroll defenders. He also has good football speed to go along with that power. I really don’t expect him to be on the board when the Broncos pick at No. 28. However if he is, it would be really difficult for Elway not to pull the trigger on that pick.

Jonathan Franklin (5-10, 205 pounds, UCLA): Franklin has impressive foot quickness. He has good vision and is a one-cut type of back. Once he makes that cut, he explodes through the hole and has pretty good speed. Some experts question his speed in the open field. However, if you look at Franklin, he kind of reminds me of a certain 6th round draft choice of our Broncos in 1995.

Mike James (5-10, 223 pounds, Miami): James is the guy I am following. I saw him in the Senior Bowl and was impressed. He doesn’t seem to do anything great, but does many things very well. He shows versatility as a runner, receiver out of the backfield, and pass blocks very well. I think there is a good chance that James will be there for the Broncos in the third round and maybe even the fourth round. Since there are a few areas of need, I think they can go get that defensive tackle or inside linebacker in the first round and still get very good value at RB in the 3rd with James.

Other backs that might be a good fit and value for the Broncos which they can get in either rounds two or three are: Stepfan Taylor (5-9, 214 pounds, Stanford), Le’Veon Bell (6-1, 230 pounds, Michigan State), Jawan Jamison (5-7, 203 pounds, Rutgers), and Andre Ellington (5-9, 199 pounds, Clemson).

As stated, the Broncos do need to fortify the RB position not only for 2013, but for the next five or six years. This is a very deep draft in a few particular areas of need for Denver (DT, DB, and RB). As such, I don’t believe they need to overreach for a back in the first round. They should take the best player on the board in one of those positions and then let the players of value fall to them in subsequent rounds. Any way you size it up, if the Broncos’ Brass do its due diligence in selecting a running back, fans will be doing back-flips for years to come. Yeah, I know…cheesy!
