As far as wins and losses go, week one of the NFL preseason was not kind to the AFC West. The Dallas Cowboys converted a two point conversion with a few seconds remaining in their home opener to beat the Broncos. Additionally, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shut out the Chiefs in KC, and NFC West teams Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks were on the winning side when they faced off against the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers, respectively.

All the AFC West teams, except the Broncos, opened up their preseason at home. In week two, the tables will turn when Kansas City, Oakland, and San Diego hit the road, while the Broncos welcome the Buffalo Bills to Denver.

The NFC teams definitely had the upper hand in week one of the preseason. What will happen in week two?

The Denver Broncos open up the 2011 campaign tomorrow night in Arlington, Texas where they face the Dallas Cowboys. If this were a past NFL season, I would have, without a doubt, said this game really won’t count because it is only preseason. However, even though the outcome of tomorrow’s game will not directly impact the Broncos’ regular season record, this game will most likely make a very bold statement given the strange, lockout-controlled offseason, a head coaching change, a three quarterback saga worthy of a soap opera, and an ex-NFL star quarterback in his first season as the Broncos’ Vice President of Football Operations.

Amidst all the Kyle Orton-Miami Dolphins trade speculation, new Broncos head coach John Fox has quietly reloaded the team at a few positions throughout the NFL’s lockout-shortened free agency. If you’re not the Philadelphia Eagles or New England Patriots, keeping track of every move can be tough. As of early August, here is a summary of the Broncos’ free agent signings so far, listed by position:

Name Position Age

Derrick Harvey DE 24
Ryan McBean DE 27
Marcus Thomas DE 25
Daniel Fells TE 27
Dante Rosario TE 26
Wesley Woodyard ILB 25
Matt Prater K 26
David Anderson WR 28
Willis McGahee RB 29

While Fox, John Elway, and Brian Xanders may well continue to sculpt the Broncos’ roster in free agency throughout the preseason (which, by the way, kicks off next Thursday in Cowboys Stadium), a few patterns emerge from the above summary.
