There are many incredible organizations in the NFL and sports in general. As Broncomaniacs (I am making an assumption here) we tend to think the Broncos are the best. That is obviously our bias and up for debate. However, when you observe the harrowing happenings of this past week you realize that the Broncos are certainly among the elite when it comes to dealing with one of their own.

Eric Studesville, the Broncos current running backs coach and former interim head coach (in case you forgot) lost both of his parents simultaneously in a motorcycling accident in Texas this week. It s a tragedy unlike anything many us will ever experience. Losing both of your parents in a matter of minutes is truly an unthinkable event but Eric Studesville had to confront it Tuesday, June 4.

The Broncos cancelled media events on Wednesday but released this statement:

“Our most heartfelt condolences go to Eric Studesville and his entire family following the tragic loss of his parents, Al and Jan Studesville. We were devastated to learn of their passing today. Our thoughts and prayers are with Eric and his family, and our organization will support them however possible during this difficult time.”

Pat Bowlen also provided Studesville and his family with a private plane in order to fly to Madison, Wisconson where Studeville grew up and where funeral services are scheduled.

Football is the game we love and the Broncos are the team we love to watch play it but this week is about the Bronco family. It’s about the very things that make a team. This week a member of our family was severely wounded and our hearts and prayers go out to him.

To Al and Jan Studeville… may they rest in peace.

A few days have passed since a fax fumble fiasco, and Denver Broncos fans are still reacting to the surprising release of beloved veteran and fan favorite, Elvis Dumervil. I remember hearing the news this past Friday about it. I stayed glued to my smart phone for any breaking updates about the team’s contract agreement with Dumervil. Finally the moment came that the Broncos and Dumervil agreed to terms; I was breathing a sigh of relief. The next moment I heard there was a technology issue with the fax machine and the contract was not received before the deadline. So as I have written before, Elvis has officially left the building, but I wasn’t expecting it like that.

How was the ball dropped on this? (Pardon the pun). I am sure there are already buzzing stories of conspiracy out there, but the fact remains that Elvis is officially free to allow him the right to shop elsewhere. In fact, rumors have floated around that Dumervil is in negotiations with the Baltimore Ravens. This would be a sting to Broncos Country for more than one reason.

The acquisition of WR Wes Welker from long-time Denver rival, the New England Patriots, shocked and stung his teammates, most notably Tom Brady. That said, if Dumervil signs with the team that ended the Broncos dream season and went on to win the Super Bowl; this free agency period will have delivered cold slaps in the face to rival franchises all around. Was it conspiracy? Who knows. Dumervil has since gone with different representation by firing his agent, Marty Magid, and hiring renowned agent, Tom Condon. Condon sent in an appeal to the league on behalf of Dumervil’s contract hoping to grant an exception. The league ultimately denied the appeal. Deadlines are deadlines, no exceptions.

The question is, what does Pat Bowlen think of all this? Bowlen was here in Arizona recently and was asked about the Dumervil fax blunder. Did it embarrass him and his dynasty franchise? “Not really. I’ve been around here for quite a few years. I’ve seen just about everything. This is not unusual.” Bowlen said Monday at the NFL meetings according to the Denver Post.

It is here again that fans need to place faith in the main men in charge in the high offices at Dove Valley. Entering his 30th year owning the Broncos franchise, it should come to no surprise that he has seen situations like this. To name a few, Bowlen has seen his team lose three Super Bowls, lose out on plenty of playoff games, lost star players because of personality disputes with the coaching staff, hired and fired coaches; you name it, he has seen it.

It should be said, however, that he also won back-to-back Super Bowls with former Broncos QB and now VP of Operations, John Elway, making Broncos franchise history. This exact time last year, Bowlen and Elway again made history as they signed the most infamous quarterback in free agency, Peyton Manning, and that was only the beginning!

If we can get Dumervil back, that would be awesome. However, if he picks up a deal with another team, I wish him the best of luck and deeply thank him for all he did for the Denver Broncos. I have come to terms with the fact that whatever happens, will be for the best. With all the craziness that is going on right now, try and remember the most important thing, Bronco fans. Pat Bowlen and John Elway want to win Super Bowls and will do what it takes to bring the road to the Super Bowl back though Mile High.

(USA Today Sports)

Two days after one of the most crushing victories our Denver Broncos and us fans have ever endured, owner Pat Bowlen addressed Broncos Country with an open letter on the team’s official website.

To summarize, Mr. Bowlen expressed his disappointment in how the season ended. He identified the expectations of both the organization and the fan base heading into “The Tournament” and the eventual disappointment of a 38-35 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in double overtime. It was a game that Denver should have won, but Baltimore deserved to win. To me, this is a sentiment that seemed to be the undertone of the letter. Mr. Bowlen did not lament the loss, rather identified it as the beginning of taking that next step forward in returning the Broncos back to the top of the NFL Mountain.

The letter was written with the humility of a man who is dedicated to bringing a winner to a nation of fans whom he clearly understands is the foundation of his business. It was written with the empathy of a man who sees himself as much of a fan as he does an owner. Lastly, it was written with the competitive fire of a man who, as much as anybody who has ever donned the orange and blue on the field, desires to be the very best.

To me, the most telling and encouraging part of the letter is the following excerpt:

I said publicly last year that I wanted 2012 to be a great season, not just a good season. We certainly had a very good season and perhaps exceeded a few expectations…But Broncos fans, you and I know what a great season looks like. – Pat Bowlen (DenverBroncos.com)

Mr. Bowlen went on to promise his dedication to improving on a season that was good, but not what we as Broncos Nation have come to expect.

You can read the letter here.

In addition to being a Broncos fan, I am a New York Mets fan. While this might seem a bit out of place in this article, there is a point to be made. So please bear with me.

I often find myself longing for the Mets to have ownership as committed to winning as their cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees. This stirs up internal conflict of selling out class and dignity for championships as the latter has often turned its organization into a full-fledged circus just to win a ring.

This is where I tie it in with the Broncos and Pat Bowlen.

Mr. Bowlen gives us Broncos fans the best of both worlds: the commitment to winning without the circus environment. Even during the Josh McDaniels’ error…um, I mean era, he genuinely felt that he was making decisions based on the best interest of the Denver Broncos. When it went awry he quickly pulled the plug in said best interest rather than worrying about his ego taking a hit for those decisions which didn’t pan out. We have seen other owners in the NFL (past and present) who won’t make seemingly necessary changes because it was a sign that they made a mistake; even at the risk of their respective teams’ progression. Pat Bowlen is a class act from the word, “go”.

Time heals all wounds and the wound from the 2012 Divisional Playoffs is still gaping, raw, and painful. However, this letter from the owner is metaphorically, a glob of Neosporin and a super adhesive bandage. Thus my responsorial letter to Mr. Bowlen goes like this:

Mr. Bowlen, thank you for your concern for and commitment to us fans. We are fortunate that you are the owner of our beloved Broncos and trust that you will employ all resources to bring Mr. Lombardi’s Trophy back to the Mile High City. And upon the Commissioner handing to you the NFLs Holy Grail, Broncos Nation can gleefully proclaim at the top of its collective lungs “THIS ONE’S FOR YOU!!!!!!”
