There’s was some concern surrounding Broncos Country this week when people heard that offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen would be interviewing for head coaching positions this week with Jacksonville and St. Louis, respectively.

People thought that time and energy would be taken away form their preparation for the New England Patriots.

Well, half of that concern can be put to rest. The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Mike Mularkey before McCoy had the chance to interview.

“When I talked to them (the Jaguars) on Saturday, I had a very strong belief that we would win the football game, so I couldn’t go as soon as they wanted me to go,” McCoy said.

Jags’ GM Gene Smith made the decision to hire Mularkey last night because he felt like he could no longer wait on McCoy.

“I’d love to be a head coach sometime, but I’m very happy with where I’m at,” McCoy said. “I work for a great organization with great people and I love coaching the guys that we coach here. ”

The guys love Coach McCoy as well. Lance Ball reportedly called McCoy and offensive genius this week.

“Good players make good coaches,” McCoy said.

And good coaches make good players as well.

A few bits and pieces of Broncos related news to talk about this morning,

First off, head over NFL.com to read my weekly article about the Broncos. This week, I talk about John Elway’s leadership and his determination to build a team through the draft.

Next, the Broncos front office had a rough day yesterday. Falcons’ offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey cancelled his interview with the Broncos, but kept his meeting with the Browns. There is still no word on what Jim Harbaugh’s plans are, but if I were a betting woman, I would put money down on him returning to Stanford. QB Andrew Luck announced yesterday that he would return to school for another season instead of declaring for the draft, so Harbaugh may want to stick around for that.

The Broncos have just two interviews scheduled so far. One with interim head coach Eric Studesville and one with Giants’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.

Finally, it looks like right offensive tackle Ryan Harris is on his way out the Dove Valley door. His contract is up and his injuries have contributed to a decline in performance. The Broncos may want to make an improvement at the position since the right tackle is responsible for protecting Tim Tebow’s blind spot. Can Ryan Clady move over to the right side? He did a helluva job protecting Jay Cutler two years ago when the Broncos were in the zone-run scheme. Once Josh McDaniels came in and favored the power-run blocking scheme, that’s when both Clady and Harris had trouble. This season, Kyle Orton was sacked the 7th most times in just 13 games.  

UPDATE 8:19 a.m. – The Broncos will not be interviewing Jim Harbaugh.

This time, they’re turning to a couple of defensive coordinators.

Perry Fewell is the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, and has held that position for one year. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2006 to 2009, and served as the interim head coach beginning in November of 2009 after the Bills fired Dick Jauron. The Bills finished 6-10 that season.
