It’s painful to watch how close the Broncos last second effort to score a touchdown was against the Chargers. Ideally, Matthew Willis would have caught the ball and confetti would have fallen from the sky.

Let’s take a look at the play:

While the refs didn’t call pass interference Chargers’ CB Dante Hughes for pushing Willis out of the endzone, the non-call is up for debate.

According to the NFL, pass interference is:

“When any player movement beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders the progress of an eligible player of such player’s opportunity to catch the ball.”

Under section A:

“Contact by a defender who is not playing the ball and such contact restricts the receiver’s opportunity to make the catch.”

Clearly Hughes’ shove was not incidental contact. Had the call been made, the Broncos would have received the ball on the Chargers’ 1-yard line.

A missed call and a missed opportunity in my opinion. What’s yours?

The good news is the quality of Broncos football can only get better. The bad news is the quarterback situation just got more complicated. If competition breeds greatness, then expect the Broncos to have two great options at quarterback.

The Broncos opened the 2011 season with a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys beat the Broncos 24-23.

As expected Kyle Orton and his first-team offense took the field first, and to be honest, the first drive looked a lot like drives from last season, only the ground game was more productive.

Orton orchestrated a 13 play drive over six minutes that ended with a Matt Prater field-goal. Orton went 2-for-6 for 37 yards with his biggest play being a 29-yard pass to Eric Decker. John Fox’s run-first squad got three of their four first downs by rushing during this drive.

Knowshon Moreno who looks lean and mean averaged 5.8 yards on his four carries. The question will be whether or not his leaner body can handle the pounding that Fox’s offense demands from its backs. Willis McGahee had 2 carries for 17 yards.

During the Mike Shanahan era, Denver Broncos players dotted the fantasy football landscape with regularity. The offensive starters could be counted on for a solid season, and previously unknown running backs would become fantasy saviors who could lead your team to a surprising fantasy championship. Shanahan would also become the master of tormenting fantasy owners by employing a strange “rotating RB platoon” where you never knew who was going to get the nod on any given Sunday. Still, during most of his time in Denver, you could count on productive fantasy seasons from most players.

But just as the wins have been harder to come by in recent seasons, so have the number of fantasy contributors on the Broncos roster. There still have been some bright spots worthy of consideration for a fantasy team; they have just been fewer and farther between.

Despite sitting during the final 3 games of the 2010 season, Denver quarterback Kyle Orton had a great year in terms of fantasy production. He finished 10th in the league with 3,653-yards passing and he threw 20 touchdowns against only 9 picks. Brandon Lloyd had had a Pro Bowl season in 2010 and ended up with more receiving yards than any other player in the NFL. So despite the horrible results in the win-loss column lately, all has not been lost for Broncos players in the fantasy world.
