Marijuana may still be banned under federal law, but voters in Colorado and Washington have passed referendums legalizing marijuana for recreational use. It is now legal for residents of Colorado and Washington over 21 years of age to possess one ounce of marijuana.

What implication does this have on the NFL, particularly for players on the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks?

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says that the substance still falls on the league’s list of banned substances.

“The NFL’s policy is collectively bargained and will continue to apply in the same manner it has for decades. Marijuana remains prohibited under the NFL substance abuse program.” -NFL spokesman Greg Aiello (USA Today) 

Players can be suspended for up to four games for failing a drug test.
