I’m here to give your eyes a lunchtime break. We have some great things for you to listen to today.

First and foremost, this week’s episode of Predominantly Orange Sports Talk Radio is up and running. Vaughn Carter records this one from Chicago and talks about the Broncos recent loss to the Patriots and the unbelievable ratings for that game, the team’s playoff chances, and their upcoming Christmas Eve game in Buffalo.

As usual, Carter brings in all of the greatest audio clips from the week and gives us a good show.

Next up, one of my favorite podcasts around, the Colorado Sports Guys, talked to former Broncos great Karl Mecklenberg. Ross Martin and Nate Timmons got Mecklenberg to talk about his recent Hall of Fame honors, stories from his playing days, what he’s up to now, and this current Broncos team. It’s a can’t miss. You can listen here. It begins at the 76:50 mark.

Finally, I received an email this morning from Allen Krehbiel who is a singer/songwriter in the Denver area. He wrote a song to counter all of the negative Tim Tebow talk.

“It’s a tribute to Tim’s character and championship spirit,” Allen said.

Here is his song:

Stay tuned for some great afternoon content as I dissect what Mike McCoy and Dennis Allen say in their weekly press conferences.

So here we are talking about April’s upcoming NFL draft and agonizing over who the Broncos will take with the No. 2 overall pick. Heck, we’re even struggling with whether or not we want our Broncos to trade the pick and bump our number of overall picks up from 6 to 8 or even to 9. Trust me, as a guy who has predominantly orange blood coursing through his veins, I get agita (it’s Italian for any stomach ailment with which one might be afflicted) just thinking about what the Johns are going to do at No. 2.

Let us think a little unconventionally, though. I read Jim Saccomano’s blog on DenverBroncos.com from last Thursday, February 17th entitled “Late Selections as Vital as Early Ones” and he sheds some light on a few great examples of all-time great Broncos either selected in the late rounds or were free-agent rookie signings. Mentioned in the blog are the great late round picks such as:

Karl Mecklenberg (13 RD in 1983) – A multiple time pro-bowler, Mecklenberg played all positions in the front-seven. He led the Broncos defense to three Super Bowls and is a distinguished member of the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame. IMHO, Mecklenberg should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

There’s no doubt that the Broncos’ organization is very active in the local community. From the front office to cheerleaders to current and former players, the Broncos help better the city of Denver beyond football.

Karl Mecklenberg appreciates out troops during a charity event in Denver on Veteran's Day.

At the team level, you can see all of the Broncos’ community involvement right here. From helping the city’s youth and homeless population to tackling health issues, the Broncos represent more than just football. Many players get involved as well. For example, Brian Dawkins is a spokesman for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, works with the Burn Prevention Foundation, and has visited troops overseas. Tim Tebow has the Tim Tebow Foundation which aims to brighten the days of unfortunate youth, and a number of players visit patients in local hospitals to bring a smile to the face.

Most recently, former Broncos linebacker Karl Mecklenberg hosted a military appreciation night to send holiday care packages to troops who are deployed overseas.

“This Veterans Day, former Denver Broncos linebacker Karl Mecklenburg hosted a special reception for Crown Royal’s Operation CAMO Care Package program in Denver. Mecklenburg was joined by United States Air Force Brigadier General (Ret.) Gary Hahn to salute the troops of past and present while adding the finishing touches to some of the 10,000 CAMO Care Packages to be sent to deployed U.S. troops overseas before the holidays.

Mecklenburg, Hahn and other guests penned personalized messages on postcards to be included in the CAMO Care Packages, offering well wishes and words of gratitude and encouragement.

Through a partnership with non-profit Operation Troop Aid (OTA), the CAMO Care Packages will be filled with various items from snacks to toiletries and will be sent to legal-drinking age service members just in time for the holidays.”
