With the signings of Wes Welker, Louis Vasquez and the recent addition of draftees Vinston Panter and Montee Ball, you have to think that the Broncos’ offense is complete. It’s May 11 and for the football faithful, that means we’re just three months away from the NFL’s first slate of pre-season games and four months from the start of the regular season. As Peyton Manning texted Kayvon Webster, “It’s time to work.” That doesn’t mean all of the free agent moves are done however.

Many fans continue to ask who else the Broncos have their eye on. Are there still free agents out there that might be signed? Sure there are, right? On the offensive side of the ball perhaps not but there are some big name free agents out there to be had. Does John Elway and Company want or need any of these guys?

Richard Seymour, DT, still remains without a contract. The Broncos have expressed interest and I personally would love to see him in Orange. He has a lot left in the tank and with Terrance Knighton and Sylvester Williams now his dangerous partners in crime, Seymour could stay fresh. That sounds like trouble for opposing offenses. However, it looks like Seymour is in an all-or-nothing stance. He wants big money or he will retire. I’d have to say the odds of seeing Seymour become a Bronco are slim.

Israel Idonije, DE, isn’t a household name or even a name lots of football fanatics have on the tip of their tongues. While he will not be a glamorous pick up for whichever team decides to sign him, he is productive. He is strong against the run and has racked up more than 21 sacks over the last three years. Oh, and he is BIG! Also, his salary shouldn’t break the bank. He is probably not even going to garner a $1 million price tag. He sounds like a perfect candidate for those who covert value and upside in free agency. However, there haven’t been any reports that the Broncos are interested.

Dwight Freeney and John Abraham, DE, have both been discussed in Bronco circles almost ad nauseum. When Elvis Dumervil slipped away via fax machine, fans expected a snap signing of one of these guys to follow immediately. The Broncos weren’t impressed and the price tags weren’t that exciting either. I still think Israel Idonije is a better option given the acquisition of Quanterus Smith in the draft but Freeney’s connection to Manning might see him join the team if his price continues to drop. Abraham will not be a Bronco. The Bronco brass seemed very unimpressed when he came to visit.

At Linebacker, Nick Barnett and Brian Urlacher are names that come up. Urlacher, for all of his greatness and his inevitable date with the Hall of Fame, looks done. He is the very definition of long in the tooth. Still his veteran leadership probably carries with it an intangible power that this young group of Bronco linebackers could benefit from. If Urlacher were satisfied enough simply to play at a discount for a contender I think all parties involved may find this to be a terrific fit. However, he hasn’t shown any signs of settling for a lesser contract. Nick Barnett, once one of the better linebackers in the NFL was cut by the Bills after failing a physical. The Bronco brass will not be biting.

While I’d be happy to see the Broncos go after Bart Scott and sign him to a short term deal that doesn’t seem too likely. He is also a linebacker in decline but much like Brian Dawkins, he brings fire to the locker room. Still, he seems to have suitors from within the AFC East and so far there hasn’t been one peep out of the Bronco organization about him.

Credit: Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The man everyone is talking about these days is Charles Woodson. After Rahim Moore’s huge mistake only a few months ago, it’s easy for Bronco fans to want the likes of Woodson around. I mean, if the price was right why wouldn’t any team want Woodson around. However, it’s that very price tag question that’s lead me to doubt we will ever city him in the Mile High city. A possible ray of light occurred yesterday when Woodson announced that he “just wants to play”, downgrading his earlier demands to play for a contender while still garnering top dollar. Apparently, he will do anything to play at this point, or so he now claims. So far, though, only the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders have shown any interest. Wow, talk about Brian Dawkins! Woodson would be a terrific fit. Still, he Denver doesn’t look like a likely suitor.

The Broncos have put together a terrific squad this off season and had a solid needs based approach in the draft that bolstered both the offense and the defense. Woodson, Scott, Idonije and possibly Urlacher get my vote on this list… only if the price is right. Still, the Broncos, who usually go out and get what they want, unless faced with the kryptonite of 1980’s technology, haven’t made much of a push for old blood. They seem content with the roster they have and the young additions they’ve just made.

Perhaps John Elway will shock us. He’s been doing that since 1983.

The Elvis Dumervil saga finally came to an end on Sunday when he agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

It seemed he wanted to move on from Denver ever since they cut him last week, and according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post the Ravens finally increased their contract offer so it made sense financially to leave.

The rumors are that Dumervil’s pride took a big hit when he was cut and he felt like the Broncos organization owed him. That is tough to comprehend since Denver drafted him, gave him a monster contract which paid him $28 million over the last two seasons, and compensated him handsomely when he missed the entire 2010 campaign.

Regardless of Dumervil’s opinion the organization did right by him since he came into the league. They wanted to rework his contract this offseason because they believed it was “out-of-whack” compared to his market value, a belief that was proven correct in the end. Dumervil is set to make $8.5 million this season which is a big reduction from the $12 million Denver would have paid him on his old contract.

The Broncos will certainly be signing either Dwight Freeney or John Abraham to fill the void at defensive end, and odds are decent they’ll use a pick on a defensive end in the draft next month. They’ll also be counting on more production from veteran Robert Ayers.

Whoever they bring in he’ll be much cheaper than Dumervil, and if you’ve read my articles you know I believe his production can be replaced by cheaper options. The goal for the Broncos won’t be to replace Dumervil’s sack numbers with a single player, but to get those sacks by committee over the length of the season.

Obviously it’s not ideal to lose a sack specialist who is only 29 years old but this Broncos team was going to be a top Super Bowl contender with or without Dumervil. The offense is going to be a monster with Peyton Manning throwing to the best wide receiving trio in the league, and the defense has a great core of talent led by Von Miller who is the only completely irreplaceable player on that side of the ball. If the coming additions at defensive end produce anything close to Dumervil’s 11 sacks from last year this team won’t miss a beat.

The 2013 Broncos have one goal in mind: Raise the Lombardi Trophy. And that goal hasn’t changed one bit.

Denver fans should be appreciative for what Dumervil accomplished here, but this messy divorce has forever blemished his reputation amongst the fan base. Make no mistake; he wanted out of Denver or he would have chosen to return weeks ago. He now plays for the enemy and should be treated as such going forward.

It sounds like Dumervil is happy and excited with his decision to leave. But he may end up feeling differently if the Broncos go on to hoist the Lombardi Trophy without him.

If the Denver Broncos had a flux capacitor, would they go back in time?

In light of recent developments it seems the Broncos should have simply paid Elvis Dumervil what they owed him and skipped this entire episode. Of course, that didn’t happen. So, the question now is what are the Broncos waiting for? It seems no one is getting the message and the message has been sent very loud and very clear.

Let’s not forget it was Dumervil who walked away from the negotiations only to return 35 minutes prior to the NFL deadline. Even then he returned 25 minutes after the deadline the Broncos had given him! Playing for a Superbowl contender is certainly not Dumervil’s primary concern. Despite that glaringly obvious fact, here we are one week later and nothing has really changed.

Ok, yes, the Broncos now have nearly $5 million in dead money working against their salary cap. Yes, the Ravens have made Dumervil an offer that he is currently mulling over. Ok, you’re right, Dwight Freeney and John Abraham have come to visit as well. Almost forgot, Dumervil fired his former agent and hired a new one. Still, nothing has truly changed. Eight days removed from the broken fax incident and here we are waiting for Elvis Dumervil to agree to terms.

Do Bronco fans actually think Elvis wants to come back and win a Superbowl? Does the Bronco organization not realize it’s a completely financial decision for Dumervil at this point. Clearly, it’s not that he’s angry about a pay cut. The $12 million he was due is not going to happen. No team will offer him that amount and both he and his agent know that. Denver has suffered a dead money hit, made Elvis what seems to be a decent offer in light of their current cap position and despite showing some interest in a couple of other qualified candidates there is still no word from the former Bronco.

Reports from Mike Klis of the Denver Post indicate that the Broncos’ offer is better than the Ravens in the first year but it seems to be worse in year two. Ah ha! Dumervil’s new agent, Tom Condon, has apparently asked the Broncos to rework the second season but to no avail. The Broncos don’t seem to be indicating they will budge. Why? With Dumervil, it’s all about the money!

John Elway and the Bronco front office have moved swiftly in free agency. With the exception of Rashard Mendenhall and this much publicized Dumervil situation it seems the organization has had it’s way since that 4pm bell rang on March 12. So, having Freeney and Abraham come and go without a signing can only lead fans to believe the obvious. It seems that despite everything Doom has done to indicate that his primary focus is dollars, the Bronco brass is still trying to play hard ball with with him.

Football is game where players must take as much as they can get financially before their body clock expires. No one should begrudge Elvis Dumervil’s efforts to get paid. At this point, however, it’s time for the Broncos to make a move. The Broncos are trying to win a Superbowl and realize they have a very fixed window in which to do so. They need to either sign another qualified candidate, preferably Abraham from a statistical standpoint, or simply give Dumervil what he wants in year two. They made a deadline, broke it for him and now continue to wait. This behavior is the complete opposite of the otherwise well thought out and calculated strategies that have been implemented by the franchise during the early days of this free agency season.

It’s like Marty McFly trying to plead with George to simply ask Lorraine to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. He is your density! Just go get him, sign him and get this over with… Please.
