Even though Knowshon Moreno put up 111 yards of total offense (85 yards rushing, 26 yards receiving), the Denver Broncos wanted even more of an insurance policy for their ground game.

That’s why the team signed five year 235-pound veteran back Jacob Hester on Monday. The team worked out Hester and Steve Slaton last week, and decided that Hester would provide some nice bulk in the back field.

Hester played for the San Diego Chargers for four seasons, but was cut from the team in August. His numbers don’t jump off the page, but he has played in 94 NFL games, starting 23 of them. During his career, he has averaged 3.4 yards per carry. Hester can also contribute on special teams if need be.

In the Broncos’ first game without Willis McGahee, Moreno had 20 carries while rookie Ronnie Hillman had 3 carries. Don’t expect much to change with Hester on the roster.
