(James Lang-US PRESSWIRE)

When the Washington Redskins acquired Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan in free agency, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was put on the back burner even though he led the team in receiving last year.

It comes as no surprise then that the Skins’ released Gaffney Tuesday morning. Gaffney had 68 receptions for 948 yards, and 5 touchdowns in 2011. Prior to that, he was in Denver for two seasons with 54 and 65 reception seasons, respectfully.

There’s no doubt that Gaffney won’t have trouble finding a job, but I really think the Broncos should sign him again.

Peyton Manning has all of these great young receivers, but aside from Brandon Stokley, there isn’t another veteran set of hands on the team that can really make a difference.

I would be willing to bet that Gaffney would take a pay cut to catch balls from the best in the game and have a shot at winning a Super Bowl ring in the near future.

Bring back Gaff! Bring back Gaff!

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Denver Broncos have traded Jabar Gaffney to the Washington Redskins for DE Jeremy Jarmon. Jarmon is entering his 3rd NFL season and has played in 15 games over that stretch, although he has only started a single time.

Just minutes after the trade became public, John Elway tweeted the following:

“We have acquired DT Jeremy Jarmon from Washington in exchange for WR Jabar Gaffney. Jeremy is an athletic defensive lineman with great versatility. We are looking forward to having him as Bronco.”

In other news the Carolina Panthers have re-signed DeAngelo Williams to a massive 5-year $43-million deal. Hopefully Denver will use some of the money they had pegged for Williams on DT Brandon MeBane.

Eddie Royal gave his hip the royal treatment, and now he’s back on the field practicing with teammates in player-only led workouts. Royal made his first appearance since having hip surgery three and a half months ago on Monday. The timetable for Royal’s return was not etched in stone, but team’s spokesman Patrick Smyth said in February that the earliest the wideout would return would be late-May. That’s great news for the young wide receiver’s career and for the team that so desperately needs veterans on the roster.

In his third season, Royal played in all 16 games despite a nagging groin injury. He had 59 receptions for 627 yards (39.2 yards per game) and reeled in 3 touchdowns. His kick return duties took a backseat compared to his previous two seasons, but he still handled quite a bit of the punt return duties.
