The Denver Broncos will travel to “Jerry’s World” this week to play the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. Even though it’s just the first preseason game, fans of both the Broncos and the Cowboys will have keen interest in the game, and for good reason.

“This is the first time where we really evaluate talent,” Jerry Jones said. “You can evaluate one way in practice, but when it’s game time, players fall into their roles, and you get a better sense of who they are.”

Jones was in Canton last weekend, his fourth visit to the historic city in five years. Jones has seen the enshrinement of Troy Aikman, Rayfield Wright, Michael Irvin, Bob Hayes, Emmitt, and now Deion Sanders since 2006.

As you’ve heard, Floyd Little got the call, but Shannon Sharpe will have to wait another year. With Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith being automatics this year, I wasn’t too surprised Sharpe didn’t get in. I’m not worried about Sharpe. He’ll get in.

Congratulations to Little, however, for all of his football accomplishments. Floyd Little played for the Broncos for nine season, making the Pro Bowl five times, winning an NFL rushing title, and two consecutive AFC rushing titles all in a time when the Broncos offensive line was a mess and there wasn’t a solid QB under center.

Without Little leading the Broncos, the team could’ve been located to another city. When Little retired in 1975, he was the 7th all time leading rusher in the history of the NFL. All I can say is it’s about time Little got into the Hall.

The NFL season winds down this evening as the final game of the ’09 season is played. We couldn’t have asked for a better matchup with the two top teams battling it out for the coveted title of Super Bowl Champion. I hope this is an offensive showcase, one of the highest scoring games in NFL history, and all arrows point in the direction of that happening. Peyton Manning is always good at figuring defenses out at the start, and barring a Drew Brees freeze, Brees can easily heave the ball for a few TDs.

For the sake of the city of New Orleans, I want the Saints to win. The city deserves the ultimate football party, Brees deserves it, and Peyton already has a ring.

Enjoy the game!

Brett Favre retired today. Again. Two retirement announcements in a less than a year. This one is of course less dramatic. I’m sure that’s because no one is sure how true this announcement is. Will he come back again once training camp starts or will he finally retire to that rocking chair that overlooks his farm?

Tributes were given last year. Packers fans, while they still have respect for the guy, have moved on to Aaron Rodgers. New York has bigger, almost steroid like issues to deal with right now. Ahem, A-Rod. Wait! Maybe A-Rod looked to Favre to get some of the New York media off his back. I can see it now. A-Rod probably said, “Brett, my man. Help! Make another retirement announcement, so I can get a little breathing room. No one will be too surprised when you come back to Jets’ training camp in August.”

In all seriousness, I give Favre a lot of credit. He had a great season and he is still leaving at the top of his game. It may have not been the picture perfect image of Favre walking off Lambeau Field for the final time, but storybook endings don’t always happen in sports. Take for instance, some guys that walked or will walk away from the NFL well past their prime. Guys like Emmitt Smith, Shaun Alexander, and maybe LaDanian Tomlinson??? Then, there’s the other side of the coin. The guys that walked away at just the right time. The John Elways, Roger Staubachs, Barry Sanders’s, Jim Browns. Favre will be remembered along the same lines as those guys. Not a bad way to go out!
