Perhaps the biggest surprise that came out of Denver Broncos cut day is that veteran cornerback Drayton Florence was released. Florence was signed to a two-year, $4.5 million contract, but he had just 5 tackles in preseason, and it became clear that Chris Harris was the better man for the job.

It appears that Florence could be headed to the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions are still in the market for cornerback help, and they may have found their man in Drayton Florence.

Lions receiver Kassim Osgood caused a minor stir on Twitter todaywhen he sent out a welcome message to Florence, his former teammate with the San Diego Chargers.

“We would like to welcome Drayton Florence to the Lions!” Osgood wrote. – Dave Birkett (Detroit Free Press)

Florence is expected in Detroit to undergo a physical.

Other former Broncos who were claimed off the waiver wire were tackle Ryan Harris who signed with the Houston Texans, safety Rafael Bush who signed with the New Orleans Saints, and quarterback Adam Weber who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A great set of hands can net you beaucoup cash in the NFL these days.

Calvin “Megatron” Johnson just signed a mega deal with the Detroit Lions for $132 million over seven years, with $60 million guaranteed. That’s a New York Yankees contract. Surely that kind of money could pull the city from its “dump” status. According to Adam Schefter, that is the richest deal in NFL history.

Vincent Jackson, another big-time receiver and former Charger, just signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $55.5 million over five years. The Chargers just got weaker by letting Jackson walk, but then again, they couldn’t afford him. It will be nice not seeing him twice a year in the AFC West.

Fans of the Denver Broncos were hoping for an early Christmas present when the Broncos squared off against the struggling Buffalo Bills on Saturday, but they instead received a feeling more comparable to waking up with a New Year’s Day hangover.

With a win against the Bills and a loss by the Oakland Raiders in Week 16, the Broncos would have wrapped up their first AFC West division title since 2005 and earn a spot in the 2011 NFL Playoffs. Neither of those things happened. The Broncos fell hard to the Bills in a 14-40 loss and the Raiders defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, 16-13. With back-to-back losses going into the last week of the regular season, Broncos’ fans are starting to have déjà vu of late season falls of the recent past that cost the team chances at the postseason.
