Broncos Make Some Cuts

Yesterday, the Broncos released five offensive players. They were P.J. Pope, Chad Mustard, Clifford Russell, Alex Haynes, and Anthony Alridge. I was actually a little bummed that they let Mustard go. I know we already have Tony Scheffler, Nate Jackson, and Daniel Graham at tight end, but it’s tough to see Mustard go. Although Mustard played in some games last season, he didn’t put up any numbers. He was cut right after training camp, re-signed in October, waived after a month, and re-signed again after Jackson suffered a season ending injury. Believe me, I would rather see Scheffler, Jackson, and Graham at the tight end position, but Mustard has worked so hard to make it as a pro athlete. He is obviously a great personality to have on the team considering he was released and signed so many times during the season. He’s a diverse athlete, playing tight end, offensive tackle, and special teams last year. It’s hard to see Mustard go in and out of unemployment while athletes like Stephon Marbury are making $40 million for sitting on the bench. I would love to see Mustard make it somewhere if he doesn’t re-sign with the Broncos.

- Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden loves Jay Cutler’s arm, but he’s happy to have Brian Griese leading the Bucs.

- Champ Bailey is an elite tackler despite being small.

- WR Clifford Russell is out for the season due to a sprained neck that left him without feeling on the right side of his body. Glenn Martinez will make his return to the Broncos roster to filled the void.

- Rookie Jack Williams takes some of the blame for Sunday’s loss.

- One of the first Broncos’ coaches, Jack Faulkner, passed away on Sunday.

- Brandon Marshall continues to better the Denver community.

Making the Cut

While I was on vacation, there weren’t too many suprising moves made by the Broncos except the release of cornerback Domonique Foxworth and the release of receiver Clifford Russell. The team also sent third string QB Darrell Hackney packing despite a solid preseason game against Arizona. They may end up resigning him to the practice squad. Punter Sam Paulescu was released and the job was given to Brett Kern.

Injuries

Bad news for rookie tailback Anthony Alridge. He is out for the season with a torn ligament in his foot. That puts a lot more pressure on Selvin Young and Andre Hall as far as the running game is concerned. Fullback Cecil Sapp was recently put on the injured reserved list due to a quadricep injury, and rookie Ryan Torain will not suit up until half way through the season because of recent elbow surgery.

The Broncos are a beat up bunch, but at least they are not like the Patriots or Colts who have their Pro Bowl QBs Tom Brady and Peyton Manning ailing at the start of the regualr season.

Hugs All Around

It seems that Broncos alumni are uniting with each other on different teams this season. Foxworth joined Jason Elam in Atlanta while Ashley Lelie joined Javon Walker in Oakland. What’s next? Will John Lynch join forces with Brian Griese in Tampa Bay or will he retire with Jake Plummer in Idaho?

Extra Large In Texas

Take the Wendy’s commercial off the air here in Denver. Guard Montrae Holland will now be cruising through all of the Wendy’s drive-thrus in Dallas. Holland was traded to the Cowboys for a 5th round pick in the 2010 draft. Holland started all 16 games for the Broncos last year. After failing to report to training camp in shape, he didn’t practice with the team for two weeks because he had to drop the pounds by doing conditioning drills while the rest of his team practiced. Going to the Cowboys only seems natural for Holland considering they have the biggest offensive line in the league. Jerry Jones helps make this statement true: Everything is bigger in Texas.
