The Denver Broncos will reportedly open their season against the Baltimore Ravens in Denver on September 5. This comes from Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports.

Elvis Dumervil will make his return to Denver much much sooner than expected as the Broncos look for early revenge from their early playoff ousting in 2012. Breaking away from tradition, the defending Super Bowl champions will not play their first game at home thanks to a conflicting baseball schedule. The Baltimore Orioles wouldn’t step aside and let the city’s football team host the opener. This is the first time since 2003 that the defending Super Bowl champion won’t kick off the NFL season on Thursday night at home.

The full NFL schedule will be released Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. MST. Storylines of interest include the Manning Bowl, when Peyton and Eli Manning square off against each other in New York. Another big storyline is the return of head coach Mike Shanahan when the Broncos host the Washington Redskins. Of course, Peyton will return to the house that he built in Indianapolis and Wes Welker will play his former team in New England. Expect a possible Broncos vs. Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game as well. The Broncos will likely play six primetime games this season, which is the most that any one particular team is allowed.

Former Denver Broncos backup quarterback Caleb Hanie is expected to become Joe Flacco’s backup in Baltimore. This comes from Jeff Dickerson of ESPN Chicago.

Hanie has played in 10 games, which include four starts with the Chicago Bears in 2011 when Jay Cutler got hurt. He has 679 career passing yards with a 50.9 completion percentage. He has 3 career touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and one fumble. The six-year veteran will compete with Tyrod Taylor for the No. 2 spot on the Ravens roster.

The Broncos will be hosting the Ravens in 2013, which would bring Hanie and Elvis Dumervil back to Denver.

The NFL has announced that they will no longer be releasing schedules on Tuesday as originally planned.

“It will not be tomorrow but could be in the next week or two. We’re working to finalize it.” – NFL spokesman Greg Aiello (PFT)

The league was going to air a draft show on the NFL Network at 8:00 EST tomorrow, but the hold up comes from the fact that the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens will be opening on the road this year. The league must figure out how to configure 256 regular season games, including three prime-time games per week and 17 Thursday games all while different networks politic for certain games.

The hype will continue as we wait with pens out in front of our calendars.
