With the Denver Broncos signing defensive back Tracy Porter in free agency, the team found it’s way out of the Andre Goodman situation.

The 33-year-old Goodman was released Friday after spending three seasons with the Broncos. He had 109 tackles, 7 interceptions, 1 sack, and 35 pass deflections during his tenure in Denver.

Goodman was challenged often during his time in Denver since he played opposite Champ Bailey at right corner. It became clear during the playoffs that Goodman was having trouble keeping up with speedier receivers as he was often beat in coverage and missed tackles in the secondary.

Goodman was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2002 draft. He also spent time with the Miami Dolphins.

The man that they hope fills Goodman’s spot is 4-year NFL veteran Tracy Porter who comes to Denver after four seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He started 14 games for the Saints last season where he had 52 tackles, 1 interceptions, 9 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles.

(Derick E. Hingle-US PRESSWIRE)

Cornerback Tracy Porter intercepted Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown. That sealed the New Orleans Saints 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Once foes, Manning and Porter will now team up in Denver. The Broncos signed Porter to a one-year deal.

Porter was drafted out of Indiana in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft. In his four seasons with the Saints, he has 195 tackles, 7 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles to his name.

This is someone that can come in right away and make a difference. The Broncos have been on the lookout for a veteran corner to compete for Andre Goodman’s job. They found just that in Porter.

Porter is a bit small (5’11″, 186 pounds) when you think about him going up against some of the big receivers in the AFC West, but he’s capable of making big plays.

Now that the Manning deal is done, the Broncos are looking for the best available talent to surround him. They also signed WR Andre Caldwell on Thursday.

Many of you prefer that the Denver Broncos draft a defensive player with their first pick in the draft. Whether on the defensive line or in the secondary, the Broncos still have a lot of work to do and they need to improve through the draft.

Let’s take a look at the secondary. Champ Bailey and Andre Goodman are getting up there in age. Bailey is still a shutdown corner but in the next couple of years, he could make the move to safety. Goodman, meanwhile, showed his age in 2011 with younger and faster wide receivers burning him for big plays. The Broncos must look at a cornerback in the draft.

That brings me to Janoris Jenkins out of North Alabama. Huh, where? Yes, Jenkins comes out of a division II program after being dismissed from Florida after his third arrest in his college career.
