Quick, can you name the top 10 cornerbacks currently playing in the NFL? How about the 10 best offensive tackles of 2010?

How about this: can you name the top 10 quarterbacks playing now? A much easier task, right? Names like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, Michael Vick, and Eli Manning jump to mind in no particular order. If you want more names, try Josh Freeman, Matt Schaub, Joe Flacco, Matt Cassel and even Sam Bradford, who looked good in his rookie season.

The quarterback is the face of a franchise, not only to its own fans, but to the entire NFL.

How many times do owners well up when releasing a coach? How many owners dedicated Super Bowls won by the team to a player, shifting the focus away from himself? It is difficult to think of any owners beyond Bowlen who are that dedicated to a team.

]]> In a press conference following the hiring of current head coach Hue Jackson, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis spent time discussing the fines he levied against former coach Tom Cable as well as other issues he had. It was eerily reminiscent of Davis’ press conference when he hired Cable after the release of Lane Kiffin, where David took the opportunity to openly air out his issues with Kiffin, focusing on the past instead of the future.

Could any Broncos fan see owner Pat Bowlen doing this? My guess is no.

]]> The Kansas City Chiefs‘ turnaround success in 2010 came in part as a result of their great running back tandem: Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones combined for over 2,300 yards rushing.

The Chiefs’ success is not uncommon in the NFL today. The New York Giants’ tandem of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs combined for over 2,000 yards in 2010. The New York Jets combination of LaDanian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene combined for 1,600 yards. Denver Broncos’ head coach John Fox‘s former team, the Carolina Panthers, used the tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart had over 2,200 yards in 2009.

More and more, teams are finding that having one running back is too much of a burden for any one player to carry. Look at the Cleveland Browns’ Peyton Hillis: his first 100-yard game was the third game of the 2010 season, yet his carries went down from 21 to six between Weeks 14 and 17, and his yards-per-attempt went from 5.1 to 2.2 in the same range.
