Could the New York Jets be targeting former Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning for their vacant general manager position?

Adam Gase was the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach every year except the Super Bowl 50 season while Peyton Manning was the team’s quarterback.

After Mike McCoy left following the 2012 season, Manning and Gase put their minds together and came up with the best offense in NFL history.

Gase coordinated, Manning executed, and the Broncos put 606 points up that season. They’ve put up 618 points in 2017 and 2018 combined.

What Manning and Gase had was special, so it makes sense that the Jets would fire their general manager after two seemingly strong offseasons and pursue Manning while he’s still available.

If you’re not early on these kinds of things, you’re late.

This rumor originated with Pro Football Talk.

If Manning took a job with the New York Jets, it would certainly mean less appearances at Dove Valley. Manning has made his home in Denver and frequently visits the Broncos’ facility and makes appearances for the team every now and again.

Now that this rumor involving the Jets is out there, perhaps other teams will come out of the woodwork to try and get Manning in their building.

Would the Broncos be part of that derby again?

John Elway has two years left on his contract as general manager. If he’s not planning on keeping that role beyond these next two years, would it make sense to start grooming Manning for the job now?

That’s probably just a pipe dream. In the here and now, Manning has suitors. The Cleveland Browns have been rumored to be interested in Manning in some capacity, and the team that drafted him into the NFL — the Indianapolis Colts — has also been rumored to be interested in having Manning back in an official capacity.

Manning does not appear in any hurry to make any official decisions. He’s not going to be some team’s offensive coordinator. He’s not going to be the new Monday Night Football guy for ESPN.

Manning is going to get a job like the one rumored here in the NFL sooner or later, and it might be sooner.
