The Denver Broncos have reached an agreement on a four-year deal with rookie RB De’Angelo Henderson of Coastal Carolina, a sixth round pick…

According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, the Broncos have reached a four-year agreement with sixth round pick De’Angelo Henderson, an exciting rookie running back out of Coastal Carolina.

Henderson was selected 203rd overall in this past year’s draft and finished his collegiate career with a whopping 58 rushing touchdowns in 50 career games. He finished his career with a combined 64 touchdowns (six receiving) and averaged 6.4 yards per carry on 721 touches out of the backfield.

Simply put, the 5-foot-7 Henderson packs a big time punch for a smaller back.

It was tough to find game tape on Henderson, but I was able to do some digging and find full Coastal Carolina games on YouTube. This guy is the real deal, and he adds a fun element to the running back position that was missing with last year’s departure of Ronnie Hillman:

Speed.

Of course, since the Broncos drafted Henderson, they also signed Jamaal Charles, a veteran who is expected to come in and have a pretty significant impact despite signing a team-friendly, low risk deal. The Broncos picked up Henderson thanks to his fantastic production but also rare set of skills.

It’s not uncommon for a running back that is 5-foot-7 to run a 4.48. Smaller backs are typically faster because they are lighter and usually, you don’t make it in football if you don’t have either size or speed. What is uncommon about Henderson is the fact that he’s that short and that fast, but weighs 207 pounds.

That kind of bulk and speed gives Henderson a major advantage. He’s tough to bring down as it is, but his low center of gravity combined with exceptional speed and quickness is one major reason why he averaged more than a touchdown per game in his college career.

I’m not saying Henderson should have been a first round pick or anything, but when you watch him play, it’s clear he has the type of ability that translates to today’s NFL, both as a runner and pass catcher.

His inclusion in the Broncos’ offense will be exciting to monitor moving forward.
