Denver Broncos rookie tight end Jake Butt has chosen his number, and it’s the same number once worn by a team legend, Rod Smith…
New Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt is certain to be one of the most popular players on the team and already has one of the hottest selling items on Fanatics.com — his new jersey. Butt has officially selected the number he will wear moving forward, and it’s a number that was worn by a Denver Broncos legend…

Denver Broncos legend Rod Smith donned the no. 80 from 1995-2006 where he racked up 11,389 yards, 68 touchdowns, and a whopping 849 catches. Smith was once an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Southern State who was instrumental in the Broncos’ Super Bowl wins in the late 90s.
He became one of the best receivers in team history and is recognized as one of the best undrafted players in the long-history of the NFL.

There have been other players to wear no. 80 for the Broncos since Smith retired over 10 years ago, most notably tight end Julius Thomas, who caught 24 touchdown passes from 2013-14 before signing a major free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Thomas is now with the Miami Dolphins.
Now, the number belongs to Jake Butt, a rookie tight end who was vastly under-drafted due to a torn ACL in his final collegiate game. The Broncos stole Butt in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft but his college no. 88 is currently owned by Demaryius Thomas.
Thomas isn’t giving up no. 88, so Butt got the opportunity to start fresh. The Jake Butt no. 80 jersey is certain to be a popular item among Denver Broncos fans. I know I’m already getting set to order one.
Other rookie jersey numbers have started to slowly leak, such as first round pick Garett Bolles wearing no. 72, and DeMarcus Walker wearing no. 57.
