With rumors that the Denver Broncos could be in the running to sign or trade for Tony Romo, I talk about how that would make no sense in the long run.

When it comes to free agency, there are a various amount of theories and stories that make sense to some and not a lot to others.

One of the biggest stories that has been linked to the Denver Broncos is the possibility of Tony Romo either getting traded to the Broncos or being released and then signed.

There is no doubt that the Denver Broncos will need some veteran leadership. But in all honesty, I do not believe having Tony Romo play for the Broncos makes any sense.

Here are a few reasons why I do not believe it would be the right idea.

His Injury History/Playing Style

Let us put off to the side on how subpar the Denver Broncos offensive line is. Yes, with the line that the team has, Romo would not make it to the regular season.

Here is what Sayre Bedinger had to say about Romo’s playing skills.

To recap, Sayre points out that the Denver Broncos could have the best offensive line or the worst. It would not make a bit of difference. It all comes down to Tony Romo’s style of play.

I would have to agree. While the O-Line’s job is to open the run and protect the quarterback, Romo could make some plays to prevent injury.

Let us not forget that Tony Romo has not had a full 16 game season since 2012.

How Much Does He Have In The Tank?

Tony Romo will be turning 37 in April. While the Denver Broncos have a knack for older quarterbacks winning the Super Bowl ( Elway was 38, Manning was 39), I would still tread carefully when it comes to an older quarterback.

With his injury history, it would be even worse as you get older. The body completely shuts down and you lose that physical strength you had to play a game where it does get physical.

As far as we know, Romo might have maybe one or two years left. What would the point be in signing a quarterback to that short of a deal unless he was backing up?

He Would Hamper the Development of Trevor Siemian/Paxton Lynch

My biggest issue to the whole Tony Romo to Denver possibilities is how much that could impact the development of both Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch.

I honestly believe that having Romo in Denver would hurt Trevor Siemian more than Paxton Lynch.

Here, you have a quarterback who started 14 games and went 8-6. There is a sneaking suspicion that Siemian might have a big year in Year Three. Why would the Denver Broncos destroy that development by bringing in Romo?

For Paxton Lynch, it would only hamper him for about a year or two while Romo was in town. However, it would rob him of the important snaps that he needs to develop. Especially if Trevor Siemian is still here.

And I will throw in one more thought. Not going back to square one with either Siemian or Lynch would give the Denver Broncos a better chance of being competitive for years to come.

While other teams will be trying to catch up with their current veteran quarterbacks, the Denver Broncos will be ready to go.

Conclusion

I honestly believe having Tony Romo play for the Denver Broncos makes the least amount of sense for the three reasons I have listed above.

Age, style or play, and the risk of harming development are the key reasons why I would not want to see Tony Romo in Denver.

Let the Broncos work with the quarterbacks they have and focus on the other areas of need on the team. Football is a team sport. It takes 53 guys to win a game, not one veteran quarterback.

Granted it could help, but in my eyes, not in this case.
