The Denver Broncos are underway with a new head coach search, and John Elway alluded to the team seeking a bright, young mind…

As Gary Kubiak made an emotional exit from his position as the Denver Broncos head coach, John Elway has begun the preliminary search for someone to take his place. Elway alluded to the fact that the Broncos want to go young(er) with their next head coach, which makes sense given his first two hires and how each of those worked out.

That is a big statement from Elway, basically publicly expressing his desire for someone like Kyle Shanahan of the Atlanta Falcons, Vance Joseph of the Miami Dolphins, or Sean McVay of the Washington Redskins. There are obviously going to be other strong candidates, and it’s clear Elway is thinking of going young this time around.

Speaking of Kyle Shanahan, he’s the first reported candidate that the Broncos have requested an interview with…

Bringing in Shanahan makes too much sense not to happen, really.

First of all, the Broncos’ biggest weakness is on offense, so bringing in a defensive minded head coach would mean they would have to make perhaps an even more important hire at the offensive coordinator position. Hiring a defensive minded coach would also seem to rule out (at least to some degree) a potential return for coaching free agent Wade Phillips.

The Broncos are also trying to bring along a couple of young quarterbacks, and Shanahan would certainly be the best candidate for doing that. It would also seem wise for the Broncos to bring in Shanahan because he operates a similar system to that of Gary Kubiak, but better. More creative.

Notice how none of the top reasons for Shanahan coming to Denver involve his father’s former presence here. That’s not a reason to hire a head coach.

The Broncos are going to have their pick of head coach candidates yet again, and Shanahan has to be the top priority.
