Denver Broncos: C.J. Spiller is a sensible option for RB relief

The Denver Broncos are potentially going to be looking to add a running back depending on the status of C.J. Anderson. Could C.J. Spiller help out?

The Denver Broncos are dealing with a potentially serious injury to starting running back C.J Anderson, who is going for a second opinion on his knee. It’s being reported that the injury to Anderson is going to keep him out ‘at least’ a couple of weeks, perhaps even longer.

Hence, the second opinion.

The Broncos are likely going to wait and see what happens with Anderson before making any moves, but an interesting veteran name became available on Wednesday as the Seattle Seahawks cut veteran back C.J. Spiller, a player who is known for his speed and ability as a pass catching back.

The Broncos have a grinder in Devontae Booker to handle the full load while Anderson is out (for however long) but with Booker and Kapri Bibbs the only healthy backs on the roster currently, it would make sense for the Broncos to add a veteran player like Spiller who could also pitch in on special teams and ease some of the Broncos’ woes returning kickoffs.

Spiller looked decent in limited reps with the Seahawks, catching five passes for 43 yards. He also scored a touchdown a couple weeks ago, and looked like he had his speed and was in good shape.

Perhaps the Broncos will bring Spiller in for a workout. He was let go by Seattle, who has a plethora of talented running backs right now. The Seahawks have emerging stud Christine Michael and last year’s breakout rookie Thomas Rawls is finally getting healthy.

The key to Spiller’s release, however, is the latest development of rookie C.J. Prosise out of Notre Dame getting healthy. Prosise, a former wide receiver, is expected to dominate the reps for the Seahawks as a pass-catching specialist.

If Spiller was good enough to see the field for the Seahawks, who have a deep stable of backs, he’s good enough for the Broncos. There’s a hot take for you.

The Broncos also have no one capable of returning kicks at a high level. Spiller potentially could.

I think this would be a good move even if the Broncos get a ‘best case scenario’ report back on Anderson. There’s no harm in having another veteran back on the roster, and the team currently lacks a guy with big time speed at the position.

Having an outlet in the passing game like Spiller could be a major asset and a nice midseason pickup for this Broncos team.
