The Denver Broncos aren’t taking any risks with Trevor Siemian in the final preseason game, and rookie Paxton Lynch gets the start and all four quarters…

The fourth week of the preseason is typically a more meaningless game than most, but it carries a bit of extra intrigue for the Denver Broncos who are looking to not only round out their roster, but get a good look at rookie first round pick Paxton Lynch.

Lynch will start and play the entire fourth preseason game for the Broncos, something Gary Kubiak explained as simply an opportunity to see Lynch make strides from what we saw last weekend.

“Just to continue to improve,” Kubiak said on what he wants to see from Lynch. “He’s going to play with a lot of young players. I thought he could handle his group a little better than he did last week, so he’s going to play with the same guys he did last week. I was to see him consistently improve. It’s not going to be very complicated. He’s going to play a little faster and see if he can take another step.”

This is an opportunity for Lynch to not only continue to get a lot of very important game reps prior to the start of the regular season, it’s a chance for Gary Kubiak to see him execute a game plan from start to finish and play with a bunch of different players. It seems like the writing is on the wall for Lynch to take over as the starter when he’s ready but a lot will obviously depend on the early success of Trevor Siemian. Gary Kubiak talked about how ‘fast’ the coaching staff is getting Lynch ready.

“As fast as we can get it. We want to make up as much ground as we possibly can. I’ve been pleased with the progress he’s made. I’ll say this: there have been times where I’m saying, ‘Boy this is coming real fast,’ and all of a sudden he’ll remind me two days later, ‘No I’m not, not yet.’ It’s been really good. There have been steps at time where he takes a step back and we have to catch back up. Hopefully we continue to work. We’re going to have to find ways, once we get going, to actually do a lot more extra with him than say some other guys you’re working with. We want to get it done as quickly as we can.”

For a quarterback, there’s definitely a difference coming out after a half of sitting versus starting and playing an entire game. Lynch, for one, can’t wait for that opportunity.

“I’m really excited,” the Broncos rookie said. “I’ve been coming into the second half for all of the other games so I’ve kind of been sitting around and it takes me a while to get going. It’s going to feel good getting warmed up and being able to go out there and play right away.”

Slowly but surely, Lynch is getting more and more comfortable within this offense and says that things are ‘slowing down’ for him. That type of progress has given the Broncos the ability to potentially let Mark Sanchez loose or trade him to another team.

It’s a youth movement at quarterback in Denver, and Lynch getting the nod in the team’s final preseason game is evidence of their desire to see as much of him as possible before the regular season kicks off.
