The Broncos are entering week three of the preseason, a dress rehearsal for the regular season, and Mark Sanchez is third in line. Could he be traded?

What are the Denver Broncos planning to do with quarterback Mark Sanchez?

Entering the third preseason game, there are rumors that Sanchez won’t even play after Trevor Siemian starts and Paxton Lynch enters second. If Sanchez isn’t playing, it could be an indicator of a number of things, including Sanchez being released or traded.

Let’s take a look at the different options here.

First, the Denver Broncos could get Sanchez some reps against the third string, but what good would that do? Sanchez would likely do well against third string players but if he didn’t he would have absolutely no value in a trade. His reputation isn’t exactly glowing at this point.

The Broncos could also keep Sanchez out of the game because they’re confident already in what he brings to the table. They know what he is, they know his level of understanding within the offense, and it just is what it is at this point.

Regardless of what goes down against the Rams in the third week of the preseason, we know that the Broncos have a ton of flexibility with Sanchez, and it seems they are considering all avenues. In baseball, when a player is held out of a game entirely, it’s often because he’s being called up to the Major Leagues or he’s getting traded.

I’m not trying to say a trade is imminent, but when you look at the situation at quarterback in Dallas — as good as Dak Prescott has been this preseason — you start to connect some dots. Could the Broncos be holding Sanchez out of this game in case the Cowboys call about a trade? Or would the Broncos initiate those trade talks?

If the plan is to go with Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch, then the Broncos really have no need for Mark Sanchez. That would seem to indicate that Sanchez would have no trade value, and perhaps he doesn’t, but letting him go in some capacity would save the Broncos a late-round draft pick as well as $3.5 million against the salary cap this season.

That’s not a bad alternative if there are no plans to use him at all.

Perhaps the Broncos could convince Jerry Jones that Sanchez may or may not ‘pick’ them on the open market if he were a free agent, and swing the veteran quarterback for some of the rich talent on the Cowboys’ offensive line.

Or, like the Broncos did earlier this offseason, the Cowboys could simply give the Broncos a conditional draft pick for the services of Sanchez, given their current uncertain situation with Tony Romo.

There are plenty of options to consider here, and many reasons why Sanchez may or may not play in the third preseason game. It’s a situation worth monitoring closely.
