Denver Broncos second-year cornerback Lorenzo Doss is starting to make some big plays at camp, showing great improvement from year one to year two…

The Denver Broncos have the best group of cornerbacks in the NFL, but you’re only as strong as your weakest link. If that’s the case, then I would say the Broncos are in pretty great shape with 2015 fifth round draft pick Lorenzo Doss rounding out the back end of this group with his former Tulane teammate Taurean Nixon.

Doss was selected by the Broncos with the 164th overall pick in last year’s draft, and there were little to no expectations for him coming into the league. After all, he was joining the No Fly Zone that already included Aqib Talib and Chris Harris — Pro Bowl players — and former first round pick Bradley Roby along with former third round pick Kayvon Webster.

The Broncos have built such a strong secondary, it’s easy for young and talented players like Doss to get lost in the shuffle, but with Aqib Talib sidelined and Chris Harris getting the occasional day off, Doss is making the most of his opportunities.

He recently picked off a Mark Sanchez pass in the red zone, taking it 102 yards back the other way for a score. Picking off passes is nothing new for Doss, who was one of the most productive players in college football in that regard. He picked off 15 passes in three years at college, and his analysis of the interception off of Sanchez was pretty simple.

“He ran an out route. I jumped it and took it 100 yards.”

Doss is relatively soft-spoken compared to some of the other Broncos cornerbacks. As the No Fly Zone has gained credibility, so has their ability to talk trash risen. Doss isn’t quite at that level yet, as he’s still trying to get noticed by the coaches.

“I just try to do my job. I try to just come out here an be the best player I can be. I’m in great condition, so I can run all day. I’m just trying to get seen in each aspect of the game.”

The remainder of camp and the preseason will be a great opportunity for Doss to continue to showcase his skills. The Broncos know he can get his hands on the football, they know he can run well, but can he contribute in that third phase of the game? Can he make himself an asset on gamedays when reps defensively are hard to come by?

That’s what he’s working on as he continues his growth as a player, on and off the field.

“You are out there playing with the best of the best. You have to hold your weight and that’s what I try to do. I try to come out, make tackles and play the deep balls. I just try to do my job. Playing with these safeties, linebackers and d-line, I know they are going to give it their all. I just have to play my technique.”
