What will it take for the Denver Broncos to re-sign Emmanuel Sanders? They could look to Kansas City for the blueprint…

While the Denver Broncos continue to try and re-sign Von Miller, players like Brandon Marshall and Emmanuel Sanders are also trying to negotiate new long-term deals. Marshall got a sparkling new deal from the Broncos’ front office, paying him more guaranteed money than Danny Trevathan just got from the Bears on the open market.

Sanders is a prime time receiver who is only a no. 2 because of Demaryius Thomas’ presence on the roster, and an argument could be made that last year, he was the team’s best offensive player.

There were reports last week from Mike Klis that the Broncos and Sanders have exchanged contract proposals. That could mean that we’re nearing a new deal for one of the most beloved players on the roster, which would be phenomenal news.

The Kansas City Chiefs, as crazy as it sounds, could be of some help.

Going into his age 27 season, Jeremy Maclin signed a free agent contract with the Chiefs for five years, $55 million and $22.5 million guaranteed.

Sanders is going into his age 29 season, so the Broncos won’t be looking to re-sign him for another five years, but another three-year pact would make a lot of sense. The terms of which Maclin is signed would also seem to make sense, especially with some other contracts that are being given out around the league to players like Allen Hurns in Jacksonville or Keenan Allen in San Diego.

All of these players are younger than Sanders, so they’re going to get longer term deals but Sanders deserves plenty of guaranteed cash and the Broncos might have to spread that out over four years.

It wouldn’t shock me to see Sanders get the kind of guaranteed money we’ve seen handed out to guys like Hurns and Maclin (in excess of $20 million) at an APY salary of $11 million or so.

Sanders is certainly deserving, but with what the Broncos are looking at financially on the defensive side of the ball, it could turn out that the front office is trying to get him on a more team-friendly deal.

Time will tell.
