Denver Broncos OTAs: 2nd round pick Adam Gotsis won’t be fully recovered from knee surgery yet, but he’s working toward a starting role this fall…

Denver Broncos defensive line coach Bill Kollar couldn’t wait to get his hands on Adam Gotsis, and it probably won’t be long before Gotsis is out on the field starting for the Broncos…

Gotsis has a chance to do something that not even Malik Jackson did in that regard, though Jackson was a fifth round pick out of Tennessee back in 2012, and that’s earn significant snaps as a rookie. It was year two when Jackson started making an impact on the Broncos’ defense, but it wasn’t until years three and four that he truly became a significant playmaker on the defensive line.

The second round pick out of Georgia Tech provides the type of quickness, strength, and playmaking ability the Broncos need opposite Derek Wolfe and to continue opening up better situations on the outside for edge rushers like Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Shane Ray, and Shaquil Barrett.

That’s not to say a guy like Jared Crick can’t do it, or that a player like Vance Walker or even Kenny Anunike can’t come in and provide the type of inside rush that the Broncos need to create a significant edge rush, but can they do it on a consistent basis?

Despite being a late second round pick, the expectation is going to be — at some point — that Gotsis can be a full-time starter for this defense, and if Bill Kollar likes him as much as the media is letting on, then I don’t see any reason why when he’s fully healthy, he won’t be thrown into the fire similar to how Derek Wolfe was when he was a rookie.

Gotsis is expected to be ready for training camp, which is great news for the Broncos because they will be able to get an extended look at him and give him a crash course prior to hitting the field in the regular season.

This year’s rookie crop is an exciting one for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the instant impact it’s expected to have. Gotsis is a major part of that and could play a bigger role than anyone anticipated he would.
